Sega and Rovio have officially announced that <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/sonic-rumble/">Sonic Rumble</a>, the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog party royale mobile game, is now available for pre-registration. 

Combining the excitement of the party royale genre with the iconic Sonic universe, Sonic Rumble introduces 32-player challenges that merge fast-paced action that are fun to play with friends. For the first time in the <a href="https://whatoplay.com/discover/?search%5Bquery%5D=Sonic">Sonic franchise</a>’s history, the game supports cross-platform play between mobile and PC.

Starting today, fans can pre-register for Sonic Rumble via their preferred app store or the <a href="https://sonicrumble.sega.com/en/">official Sonic Rumble website</a>. 

Pre-registered players will unlock unique in-game rewards, including Rings for purchasing items, emotes, and companions such as the beloved Chao. Additional milestones will unlock even more rewards, such as the exclusive Garnet Knuckles skin and a special skin inspired by the upcoming Sonic 3: The Movie.

Reflecting the cooperative spirit of the game, the Sonic community is encouraged to work together to increase the total number of pre-registrations and unlock the highest-tier rewards for all players.

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/toem/">TOEM: A Photo Adventure</a>, the charming indie puzzle that won a BAFTA, is getting a sequel.

Creators from Something We Made unveiled on December 10 its partnership with publisher popagenda for <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/toem-2/">TOEM 2</a>. The Swedish studio made the announcement during the <a href="https://whatoplay.com/post/wholesomesnack-2024/">2024 Wholesome Snack showcase</a>.

“It’s exciting, and honestly a bit scary, returning to something so dear to our and others’ hearts,” said Niklas Mikkelsen, co-founder of Something We Made.

“The team is back together, including our amazing composers. Together, we’re working hard to make TOEM 2 stand proudly beside the original game, celebrating what worked while improving the rest. It’s an ambitious goal, and we’re doing our absolute best," he added.

While the project is still in the early stages of development, TOEM 2 is expected to launch on PC and consoles in 2026.

More updates will be revealed in the coming year, Something We Made said.
In the meantime, here are some details developers revealed about the upcoming sequel.

In TOEM 2, players reprise the role of a curious photographer embarking on a new journey to uncover hidden details. As well as assist quirky characters, and document the world’s small wonders.

Staying true to the series' core mechanics, developers promised to enhance the playful exploration, puzzle-solving, and photographic storytelling for the sequel.

Mikkelsen also revealed welcoming new members into the developing team. In doing so, it enabled them to 'operate at maximum power to deliver a sequel that captures the magic of the original while introducing fresh ideas.'

"We’ve also welcomed some new, but familiar faces to the team, bringing fresh energy while staying true to what makes TOEM special," he said.

The original TOEM: A Photo Adventure, launched in 2021 on PC and consoles. Upon its release, the game received positive feedback from players and critics alike.

They praised TOEM for its charming hand-drawn art, relaxing gameplay, and creative premise. Players explored a monochromatic world through the lens of a camera. At the same time, solve puzzles and interact with characters in their quest for discovery.

TOEM also earned numerous accolades, including the BAFTA for Game Design in 2022.

Whatoplay gave it a playscore of 8.9 on PC, and 8.6 on PlayStation 5.

This year's Wholesome Snack - The Game Awards Edition gave us a slew of adorable indie adventure games. 

Wholesome Snack, hosted by Wholesome Games, is a must-watch event for cozy game enthusiasts. The annual showcase features inspiring and uplifting game titles from developers around the globe. This year, it showcased games from 24 independent developers and renowneed publishers. 

The 36-minute digital showcase featured 13 different wholesome titles.

Mundfish Studio and Focus Entertainment have unveiled the first gameplay trailer for <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/atomic-heart/">Atomic Heart</a>’s highly anticipated third DLC, Enchantment Under the Sea, set to release on January 28, 2025.

This latest installment in the Atomic Pass takes players back to Facility 3826 with a new underwater setting: the Neptune Research Center, alongside fresh weapons, glove abilities, and powerful foes. It invites players to uncover secrets critical to saving humanity from its dystopian fate while encountering both new and familiar characters.

The DLC marks a return to the <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/bioshock/">Bioshock</a> inspired combat gameplay that made Atomic Heart a standout title in 2023, despite lukewarm reviews. Continuing the storyline with the consciousness of the Twins as companions, players will dive into the mysteries of the Neptune Research Center while exploring transformed locations such as the robot-dominated flying city of Chelomey. 

The underwater Neptune Research Center is teeming with threats, including swarms of coral mutants and the formidable MOR-4Y, pushing players to master their newfound abilities and arsenal to survive.

Enchantment Under the Sea features two new weapons: the electrified hammer, Thunderclap, and the KM-4 Kuzmich, a versatile double-barrel shotgun with customizable bullet spread. 

The Blaze and Whip gloves will also serve as new tools for the protagonist to master. Blaze allows players to unleash fiery area-of-effect attacks, while Whip functions as a grapple hook, enabling dynamic combat maneuvers and access to previously unreachable areas.

Atomic Heart received middling reviews when it was released. It has an average playscore of 7.7 on PS5, and 7.6 on PC. It currently stands at a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam from over 25,000 users. Players enjoyed the retro-futuristic Russian landscape, while also criticizing its weak story. 

Atomic Heart is currently available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC, with discounts of up to 67% on Steam until December 16.

Players excited to take a dip into Enchantment Under the Sea can purchase the game’s Premium Edition or Atomic Pass, which includes this upcoming DLC alongside previously released expansions Annihilation Instinct and Trapped in Limbo. A fourth and final DLC is yet to be revealed.

SEGA on December 9 confirmed the release of its sequel. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba--the-hinokami-chronicles-2/">Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2</a> will launch next year, the Japanese video gaming giant announced. It will arrive on PC and consoles.

Japanese game developer CyberConnect2 leads once again the development team for Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2.

Building on the success of its predecessor, players will once again step into the shoes of Tanjiro Kamado and other beloved characters. The upcoming sequel will feature story arcs from the animes's Entertainment District Arc, Swordsmith Village Arc, and Hashira Training Arc.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2 will still be an arena fighter with free exploration between battles. This is in contrast to the series' boardgame counterpart, <a href="Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Sweep the Board!">Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Sweep the Board!</a>

In the meantime, SEGA has also revealed some of the new features for the upcoming game. These included a new Story Mode. This will allow players to relive pivotal moments.

Developers have also 'significantly enhanced' its VS mode, which has a roster of over 40 characters. Like fan-favorites like Muichiro Tokito and Mitsuri Kanroji.

Returning characters from the original Hinokami Chronicles will also included in the sequel, SEGA confirmed. As well as those introduced in post-launch updates and DLCs.

The game’s base roster, on the other hand, will feature all nine Hashira, and the elite warriors of the Demon Slayer Corps.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles first came out in 2021. The game eventually became both a commercial and critical success.
It garnered praise for its storytelling, faithful adaptation, and stunning graphics. The Hinokami Chronicles has also sold over four million units worldwide.

Black Tabby Games’ visual novel horror game <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/slay-the-princess--the-pristine-cut/">Slay the Princess</a> received the coveted Grand Prize.

Slay the Princess, Thronefall, and More Honored at INDIE Live Expo 2024 Awards

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/astro-bot/">Astro Bot</a>, the PlayStation 5-exclusive platformer, took home the biggest prize during the recently concluded Titanium Awards 2024.

The jury praised Astro Bot for its innovative level design. In particular, the developers' ability to seamlessly integrate creative gameplay with homages to the PlayStation universe.

The platformer has also been a fan favorite since its release this year. The game gained popularity for blending nostalgia with cutting-edge mechanics. The award-giving body recognized the game for its intricate puzzles and expansive world-building.

Meanwhile, Metaphor: ReFantazio, a JRPG from the creators of Persona, got the Best Narrative Design for its compelling storytelling.

Best Art Direction went to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. The game was lauded for its visual style that reimagined the classic series for a modern audience. In the sound category, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II claimed Best Sound Direction for its 'immersive audio design and haunting soundtrack.'

Nomada Studio, known for its critically acclaimed <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/gris/">Gris</a>, took home the Best Spanish Indie Game award for its latest title, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/neva/">Neva</a>. The studio joined an array of winners celebrated for their contributions to the gaming industry over the past year.

The Titanium Awards annually recognizes excellence across the gaming industry.

In addition, this year's Titanium Awards also highlighted winners of the BIG Indie Contest, now in its third year. The competition, boasting a €10,000 prize pool, celebrated indie developers in three categories.

The Most Innovative Game was awarded to <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/reus-2/">Reus 2</a> by Abbey Games. The sequel to the 2013 indie hit expands on the original's concept. In addition to the prize money, Reus 2 was showcased on stage.

The Best Basque Game went to Abyssal by Pina Studios. This locally developed title stood out for its 'creative approach and cultural roots.'

Players will investigate the suspicious disappearance of a young woman's father who is replaced by a completely different man. The game promises a narrative filled with intrigue and uncertainty.

Kodansha Reveals Three Innovative Titles at INDIE Live Expo

Ivy Road and Annapurna Interactive unveiled their highly anticipated narrative-driven tea shop management game, Wanderstop, coming to PC and PlayStation 5 this March 11, 2025. The announcement was made through a new trailer unveiled at the Most Wanted 2025 Showcase from PC Gaming Show.

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/wanderstop/">Wanderstop</a> is created by Davey Wreden, known for his works on <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/the-beginners-guide/">The Beginner’s Guide</a> and the whimsical <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/the-stanley-parable/">Stanley Parable</a>. He describes Wanderstop as a reflection of his personal experiences with burnout and the challenging process of healing. 

The game’s protagonist, Alta, is a former fighter reluctantly turned teamaker, embodying a journey of self-discovery and resilience.

“Its cozy game gameplay was borne out from a lot of inner stress I was experiencing.” said Wreden, which is why the game’s trailer offered a poignant glimpse into Alta’s newfound resolve to manage a tea-shop. 

Wanderstop is more than just a game about making tea. It is also a contemplative game. As the players take on the role of Alta, harvesting and growing ingredients is essential to make the best tea. Players can craft tea using a unique contraption, and serve a variety of travelers passing through the shop. 

Each customer brings their own stories and needs, and Alta must create teas tailored to their preferences. These brief yet nuanced relationships form the heart of the game’s narrative, exploring themes of identity, purpose, and the struggle to embrace change.

As a once-renowned championship fighter, she resents her new life and longs to return to the arena. This tension deepens her interactions with customers and her journey toward accepting a role she never wanted. 

Fans of games like Recettear and <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/moonlighter/">Moonlighter</a> can find the balance of managing a business and collecting resources rewarding. 

Scheduled for release on March 11, 2025, Wanderstop invites players to put themselves in its enchanting world and introspective narrative. More updates and insights about the game will be shared through official channels and social media in the coming months.

Cozy Tea Shop Game ‘Wanderstop’ Set to Launch in March 2025

Gear up, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/citizen-sleeper/">Citizen Sleeper</a> fans. The much-awaited sequel of the popular story-driven <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/rpg/">RPG</a> just got a release date.

Indie publisher Fellow Traveller and developer Jump Over the Age announced that <a href="https://whatoplay.com/games/citizen-sleeper-2-starward-vector/">Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector</a> will launch next year. The game will land on PC and consoles this January 31, 2025. Additionally, the game will serve as a day-one addition to <a href="https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass">Xbox Game Pass</a> upon launch.

"We’re thrilled to invite players back to the Starward Belt with the Hexport demo,” said Gareth Damian Martin, founder of Jump Over the Age.

“This sequel represents everything we loved about Citizen Sleeper—enhanced and expanded. We can’t wait for players to experience the new depths of its narrative and mechanics," he added.

In Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, players reprise the role of an escaped Sleeper. But this time, they will navigate the lawless Starward Belt. Developers promised deeper dice-driven mechanics for the sequel. In it, players are tasked with finding a crew, managing a ship, and taking on risky contracts. The upcoming game also blends survival and exploration.

Gareth Damian Martin, the founder of Jump Over the Age, still leads the development of Citizen Sleeper 2. Also reuniting for this sequel are artist Guillaume Singelin and composer Amos Roddy.

Critics and players praised its emotional depth, richly crafted characters, and unique dice-driven system. Whatoplay gave it a playscore of 8.7 for PC, 8.9 for PS5, and 8.6 for Xbox consoles.

The game’s achievements include winning the <a href="https://gdconf.com/gdca">GDCA Award for Best Narrative</a>. It also received nominations for multiple BAFTA awards.
