The music gets a little repetitive, I guess, but who cares when a game is this jam-packed with content, complete with gorgeous graphics, endless customization, a brilliantly-paced campaign that knows not to overstay its welcome, and ongoing support from the developers and the community. It may be a top-down twin-sticker, but it feels like everything the shooters of the 90s were about: fast, fluid, smartly-designed, and focused on being fun instead of selling endless packs of drab DLC. It’s the best shooter of the year, hands-down, and you all are lucky I stopped playing it long enough to write this review.
It’s got fast action, tons of weapons, a huge variety of creatures and a handful of bosses to use them against and firepower flies everywhere when the encounters heat up. Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour may look different from Sam’s usual outings, but 2D fans will have as much fun checking out the excellent pixel art as series fans will tearing through enemies both familiar and new.
Not having played a Serious Sam game before, I groaned a bit when I was roped into playing it in co-op. It only took a few minutes for me to choke on that groan though as I was soon having far too much fun blasting through hordes of enemies and mini-gunning my way through foes like there was no tomorrow. As far as co-op experiences go, Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour is up there with the best. Even in single player, you’re in for a damn good ride. Just make sure you’ve got plenty of time on your hands for when you inevitably die and have to restart that last level again and again.
