Trek to Yomi is a love letter to classic Japanese cinema. Fans of the genre will be fully immersed and giddy about being able to experience something like this, and it is something to behold visually even for those who don’t come with prior knowledge. Unfortunately, those visuals are best experienced on systems other than the Nintendo Switch, which only makes the monotonous gameplay more evident. Incredible storytelling, though cliché, boosts Trek to Yomi towards something worth experiencing, especially when the game can be beaten in an afternoon.
Steven Green · Mar 07, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full reviewTrek to Yomi blends a lot of fun gameplay with a truly stunning approach to design and a tragically haunting story. Combined, this makes for an addictive game that lingers with you long after you’ve completed it.
Kirstie Summers · Feb 13, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full reviewTrek to Yomi successfully locks in the hearts and minds of the players from the drop with dramatic stings, grainy visuals and unabashed affection for the inspirations that made this project come to life.
Oliver Shellding · Feb 02, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full reviewTrek to Yomi sadly still manages to outstay its welcome. It asks its visuals to carry the gameplay, but their novelty wears off before the final act. This is particularly true on Switch, where dropped resolution and simplified scenery steal some of the magic and ugly character close-ups blemish the overall aesthetic. As imaginatively as Yomi is realized, the game still feels like a trek.
Roland Ingram · Jan 30, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full reviewDespite Trek to Yomi feeling quite lackluster in its story and barebones combat system, I couldn’t help but get sucked into Hiroki’s journey. Grievances aside, Trek to Yomi is still a very enjoyable game.
Adrian Morales · Jun 01, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full reviewTrek to Yomi is not an overly long adventure either. Outside of the standard combat there is some light exploration and puzzle solving with a few boss battles tossed in for good measure. The story is what kept me chugging through to the end. It is boilerplate but interesting. I wanted to know how things concluded so I pushed through the repetitive combat. Trek to Yomi is a game that on the surface seems way more interesting than it actually is.
Ken McKown · May 31, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full reviewTrek To Yomi is a perfect game to have as something to play on the side. It has lived up to its hype and has changed side-scrolling gaming for the future.
Junior Onunkwo · May 28, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full reviewA gorgeous game with frustrating combat and glitchy exploration, Trek to Yomi is the definition of style over substance.
George Yang · May 12, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewTrek to Yomi is an interactive take on the classic monochromatic Samurai films of yesteryear. Players take on the role of Hiroki, guiding him on his journey to exact revenge following the destruction of his village.
Cole Martin · May 11, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewTrek to Yomi has no official forebears, but it isn’t wholly unattached. Just as Salt and Sanctuary crunched FromSoftware’s unsavoury Dark Souls into two granular dimensions, and was sprinkled with spiritual nods, Menchiari looks glancingly at those works, too, opting for a stamina meter and moments that call on your patience.

Este videojuego muestra un apartado artístico y sonoro sumamente hermoso. Lamentablemente es en sus demás apartados dónde flaquea, con una historia que no logra ser memorable y una jugabilidad a la que le a faltado pulimiento.
Reviewed on Series X|STrek to Yomi is one of those games that caught my attention this year. The way it was presented actually looks so incredible to me: just pure black and white samurai game. This game showed a lot of potential in many different ways. The graphics actually look so decent, especially the cinematography. I honestly had a high expectations for this game since I've got to play Japanese-like games like Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro. This one is different. The story is somewhat mediocre, the prologue seems promising and eventually turned into a horror-like one with creepy Japanese folk-lore references behind it. The gameplay seems fine and needs a lot of polishing. The fighting mechanics are so stiff and lacking with a feeling of satisfaction. I love slashing enemies with fashion. The parry system doesn't actually work at times. Overall, this game still needs to be developed further though I can see that it showed a lot of potential.
