Attack on Titan 2 has a lot of great things going for it: Exciting aerial battles that are true to the anime and manga, several quality-of-life improvements over the original game, and both competitive and cooperative online game modes. But the fact that it recycles so much of the 2016 game’s material means that in order to get to the new season 2 content you must first wade through a rehashed story mode with its dull sidequests and tedious dialogue choices.
The game looks outstanding on Xbox One X. Taking advantage of the increased power keeps the game running at a blistering pace. The art style is also unique and watching legs and arms fly off the Titans rarely gets old. Maps tend to get a bit stale at times as they reuse a lot of the same assets, and the fact that a lot of the content is recycled from the first game including cut scenes is kind of a bummer.
It takes a little while to shake the feeling of deja vu, but once the game hits its stride it comes into its own and just swallows you up, much like one of its freaky Titans. The action is unique and somehow manages to remain exciting, despite its repetitive nature, while the bits inbetween make you feel more like you're part of a world. Fans of the original game will absolutely lap Attack on Titan 2 up, but it's those who are yet to leap into its world, video game or otherwise, that will find it the most rewarding.
