The creepy atmosphere, the dementia, and the bite-sized story of devotion gone wrong stand out strongly against some of the more phoned-in story beats of the main game. Playing it did make me wonder why this style didn’t show up in the main story. I also wonder what would’ve happened had the themes of Awakened been expanded upon, but since Visceral's said that Awakened is the only piece of Dead Space 3 story DLC that's coming, I guess we’ll never know.

Speaking as a fan of Dead Space, I feel I could skip Awakened and miss absolutely nothing of value. While some of the new ideas are nice, the sense of disappointment that none of them are capitalized upon offsets any good they do, while the story is nothing you couldn't explain in a single Tweet. While the gameplay is as solid as anything found in Dead Space 3, it could also be acquired simply by replaying chapters of Dead Space 3.

Rather than resolving what came before it, Awakened simply shrugs its shoulders for a couple hours before throwing another cliff-hanger ending your way. Sure, it still plays perfectly well, with plenty of intense dismemberment and a pleasingly varied selection of necromorph enemies to fend off. But that's all stuff you can get in Dead Space 3's already lengthy campaign. Viewed in that light, it's hard to see Awakened as anything besides redundant.
