  • Despite a frustrating camera system and some minor technical issues, Steven Universe: Save the Light is still a highly enjoyable role-playing game that will appeal to both fans of the TV series, as well as fans of the genre. Thanks to some assistance from Rebecca Sugar, the show’s creator, it perfectly captures the television show’s colorful tone and optimistic spirit. Steven Universe and South Park are both examples of licensed games adding their own unique spins on the Paper Mario RPG formula – and succeeding admirably.

  • Given its diverse following, Steven Universe: Save The Light is accessible to pretty much anyone. It’s simple to pick up so even children would be able to play it, but has enough challenge to it that adults won’t be bored. It has a lovely story about rescuing someone you care about and trying to make the world a better place in the process.

  • If you're a fan of Steven Universe, and you own a Switch, this is a no-brainer. It's an excellent take on the Paper Mario RPG formula with a few tricks of its own up its sleeve to boot. Given that the PS4 and XB1 version's tech issues are solved here, it's well worth the price of entry on Switch.

  • Despite not being very deep or engaging for an RPG, I have to admit I had a lot more fun than expected with Save the Light. I’m not exactly a Steven Universe fan in any way and still managed to have a good time with its adorable design, impressive length (at least for a licensed game) and simple, Paper Mario-esque combat system. If you’re a fan of the show or if you’re just looking for yet another casual but entertaining turn-based RPG (if you haven’t purchased Pirates of the Enchiridion yet), I’d say give Save the Light a try. You could do a lot worse.

  • Without its many technical issues, Save the Light could have been a good video game adaptation of an excellent show. The involvement of its creator is apparent and the voice cast gave the game the same consideration they do the source material. I even liked the combat and storytelling, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the frustrations of having to frequently restart the game or watch helplessly as Steven’s run animation looped while he stood next to a rock.

  • Save the Light plays like your typical RPG, but the notion that you're off on an adventure with your best friends is tied to the game’s systems in an extraordinary way. If this was all Save the Light was, we'd be talking about a simple-but-enjoyable RPG, and a pitch-perfect way to hang around in Steven's universe between seasons of the show. Unfortunately, it’s still brought down by the fact the game being broken in some major ways.

  • Steven Universe: Save the Light feels like watching an episode of the show mixed with some sweet old-school RPG nostalgia. It’s got the pure heart that makes Steven Universe so special, which makes it all the more tragic that it's just so riddled with stability issues.
