Before we begin, I just want to mention a few things.

I've been playing MH since DOS on the PS2 (which was hell since it is in Japanese) so you can say that I am a, how do I say, second gen player.

And another thing I should mention is that I am all into changes and innovations. However, to an extent.

So, lets go over the bad. I dislike the wirebug system. The game forces you to use it. And if you think you can go through the game without it, you will be surprised on your first Chameleos or Valstrax fight on how important it is to use it.

Next the Rampages. What a god awful feature to add to the MH series. It felt such a chore to go through in campaign.

The Apex monster is total trash fire. You wanna know how the Apex monsters should have been in Rise? Take a look at what they did to Apex monster in MH4U. They don't even give you any materials for Apex gear. Boo!

The weapon skills. Good lord, I never used any single one. If you want to bring something different in combat, then bring back the hunter arts in generations.

The companion system. I would have enjoyed it if they were there simply as a "mount" or extra gatherer on gathering missions. But in a team of four, each player can bring a companion in the hunt. And when that happens, the game douses your eyeballs with all there attack effects blazing from the screen. Its an eyesore.

So, lets go over the good.

Well, they brought back Chameleos. Fighting him in Rise brought back so many memories when I first fought him in DOS.

Kamura Village itself is far more interesting and lively compared to World or Iceborne's Astera or Seliana.

Gameplay itself is still fun. I can never hate the combat gameplay that MH games offer. The strategy to wait for an opening before the strike is simple and fun for me.

The Elder Dragon blessings. I think this was a great addition to the skills offered to players and add a unique theme to how players want to play there characters.

So...all in all. Is it worth playing.

Yes. It definitely is. But, is this the game to start your first monster hunter experience? No. Definitely not. I would suggest you start on MH4U. That game offers way more Rise could ever dream to. More content and challenge that is.
