V-Rally 4 isn’t exactly a bad game. It boasts really good graphics and a decent sound design, as well as a decent amount of content. The problem is that it isn’t exactly the most enjoyable game out there due to its gameplay. It’s too frustrating for newcomers and far from the standards of what simulation fans would expect. It’s neither a sim nor an arcade game, a competent anomaly that currently sits in a limbo of sorts. However, if you’re looking for a racing game where you can drive around containers in a Cape Town harbor, V-Rally 4 is the best title you’ll find.
The game almost succeeds in areas like car selection and track design, but it manages to even muck that up with silly design quirks that reduce the ability to engage with these aspects enjoyably. Most importantly, a racer is only as good as its controls, and V-Rally 4 fails miserably at granting the player any semblance of consistency there. This rally game is dead in the mud, so I’d suggest you steer clear.
Once you get to grips with how it handles, V-Rally 4 is a competent and lightweight arcade-style off-road racer with a fair bit of charm that harkens back to the series’ foundations. Aiming for spectacle and variety in design, it looks and feels like a 2018 V-Rally game. However, a shallow and disappointing career mode, irritating music, and a handful of visual and gameplay bugs means you’re likely to grow weary in a short space of time.
