The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is yet another example of what happens when games are rushed out to coincide with a movie release date. It’s especially frustrating because the web swinging really is fun, but developer Beenox wasn’t able to keep the momentum going once you hit the ground. The next time there's an Amazing Spider-Man movie, hopefully combat can be brought up to snuff, since there's plenty of promise in the air.
This isn’t a game production made from the ground up. This isn’t a labor of love or a risk of innovation. It’s just another action game with a coat of Spider-Man paint. If that’s all you want, then feel free to pick it up, but don’t expect anything profound. In a way, Spider-Man hasn’t had a truly good game since Maximum Carnage for the SNES and Genesis, and as long as Spidey keeps showing up in movie tie-ins, we likely won’t see another quality Spidey game for quite some time.
If the dispiriting The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is any indication, Activision and Beenox may have reached the same conclusion. There have been many worse Spider-Man games than this. But I can't recall one that's swung so conceptually close to greatness only to let poor execution drag it back to Earth.
