It tells a tough, bruising tale of emotional distress, and it’s important that such topics continue to get treated with respect within the industry. However, when it comes to sitting down to play it, I’m a little more apprehensive. There’s nothing objectively terrible about the platforming or sailing, but it never tries to be anything other than serviceable, with the plot clearly taking precedence over the gameplay. That’s one way to craft an experience, but the approach can still be criticized for not trying hard enough.
Sea of Solitude is an interactive story that has bits of a game peppered into it. Like gamey meat, it’s not for everyone. Some players may want more to do than run around looking for seagulls and messages in bottles in between story moments and the occasional “fight” sequence. The story (which we have not spoiled here) is likely to resonate with many people, but for some it won’t be enough to overcome a lack of fun gameplay to take players in between exposition. It is a worthy attempt, but just falls a bit short.
Sea of Solitude gives an invisible illness a real, physical, conquerable form and that itself is extremely powerful. Taking only three or four hours to complete, Sea of Solitude is a lovely, thought-provoking adventure game with a compelling narrative and smooth gameplay. It’s a worthy addition to anyone’s game library.
