  Dust 514 is an effective simulation of the economies whirring away within the military industrial complex--a farcical war to perpetuate EVE Online's inexorable cycles of death and demand. But Dust 514 needs to offer more than emerging markets for players in CCP's other, better game in order to justify its own existence.

  Developer CCP's impressive track record of supporting and enlivening EVE Online inspires confidence in Dust 514's future. For now, however, this online shooter relies too much on its connections to EVE to ignite interest, rather than letting the gameplay speak for itself. It's too bad that the gameplay doesn't have anything more exciting to say--and that Dust 514's most compelling feature matters to a relatively small contingent of players.

  DUST 514 puts parameters on how much fun the casual player, or just anyone that isn’t already involved with EVE, can have while playing the game. There shouldn’t be stipulations on how someone can get the best possible experience from a game, but that’s what’s happened here. With all of its issues, and in its current state, DUST 514 is a title that has lofty ambitions, but also far too many problems and contingencies to deal with right now. Only the hardcore EVE enthusiasts need apply.

  Dust 514 has promises of greatness. It reaches high and attempts to accomplish something not many games have even tried to this day, which should be commended. But right now, it needs a few more major updates before it gets there. With a hefty amount of microtransactions that border on offensive, there is a very ambitious, competitive game underneath the sloppy veneer.

  By all means download the client, after all it's free, and you might find comrades worth sticking around for. It's not a write-off by any means. It's just not brilliant either, which is a shame, because this is evidently fertile ground, and it could have been a wonderful shooter. As it stands, Dust 514 still feels like a work-in-progress.
