Summary

Dracula: Origin reveals the dark origins of the Dracula curse. Once the ardent defender of Christendom, Dracula loses his faith in God when he is abandoned by his one true love after she marries. Dracula then makes a pact with the Prince of Darkness, and becomes a vampire. As time goes by, Dracula discovers the existence of a manuscript that allegedly details a rite which brings damned souls back from the beyond. The player takes the role of the famous Professor Van Helsing whose life's aim is the destruction of Dracula. Van Helsing must stop the vampire from finding the manuscript. A rich adventure that takes him from London to Egypt, Austria and through Carpathian Europe right into the terrifying home of the Dark Prince.

It’s a fun and engaging plot that only gets stale when you stare at a puzzle too long. If you don’t let the “too easy” inventory search option take away from the experience, you can get a lot out of the game. However, it is not one that you will feel like revisiting unless you want to do it for the sole purpose of speed … or taking the time to absorb the detailed visuals that took a lot of effort. I imagine Dracula will rise from the digital dead again, and maybe provide some more challenge in the future.

Dracula: Origin is elegant piece of work visually, using well-known fictional characters and blending it into a fun and challenging adventure game. Everything ranging from the puzzles to the music fit in perfectly with the story. Note that this game is not ground-breaking in any way; it uses the old adventure format but with a few tweaks that make it accessible and easier for those who aren't familiar with the genre.

Dracula: Origin favors quality over quantity, yet there are plenty of challenges to sink your teeth into. The slightly shorter length could potentially be due to the reduced need for backtracking. Player's shouldn't find themselves too far out of sorts, since the game won't let you progress to the next major portion of the adventure until you've wrapped up all there is to do in a given location.
