One of the best games this year. Something i always dream of doing in a video game

Starfield

As previously mentioned in my prior reviews, I'm a gamer who particularly enjoys single-player games set in expansive open worlds. Starfield piqued my interest with its announcement, and I had the privilege of experiencing the game through the Xbox Game Pass on both my console and PC.

To be direct in my review, I must admit I find myself somewhat disappointed and confused after investing more than 40 hours in this game. It simply didn't meet my expectations as an open-world enthusiast. While the concept of exploring planets is intriguing, it failed to evoke a sense of adoration for the planets I visited. There seems to be something missing, leaving me with an overall feeling of hollowness, tedium, and complexity. Compounding the issue are the extensive dialogues, akin to reading a visual novel. Personally, I struggle with an excessive amount of dialogue in a game unless it is complemented by engaging story cutscenes. Unfortunately, Starfield doesn't provide these; instead, you're confronted with large blocks of text.

When it comes to gameplay mechanics, the gunfights felt somewhat awkward compared to games like Cyberpunk 2077. Starfield lacks AIM assist on consoles, although playing on PC improved my aiming experience. The ship-building mechanic showed promise but ultimately fell short. While the customization is satisfactory, the deeper aspects of ship construction and upgrades feel lacking. Assigning the crew to specific tasks also appeared somewhat futile. There are certain aspects of this game that left me perplexed.

The story, on the other hand, held promise. However, the extensive introduction to numerous terminologies can be perplexing, and it's only after experiencing the multiversal aspect of the game that the story becomes clearer. Notably, the majority of the main storyline revolves around collecting missing artifacts.

Regarding graphics, on the Xbox console, the game runs smoothly, maintaining at least 30fps at 4K. However, on PC, despite using a high-end GPU, I encountered numerous framerate spikes. It's possible the game still requires optimization.

All things considered, I appreciate that Bethesda devoted roughly 25 years to craft this game. There's unquestionable greatness present, but I can't help but wish they could have refined the game's storytelling and mechanics to match their ambition.![Starfield.jpg](https://cdn5.whatoplay.com/discuss/24338_1699004706444.jpg)

Somewhat disappointed and confused.

Alright. I decided to make a review on this game when the dust has settled. Everyone was talking about, both bad and good. And I wanted the honeymoon phase to be over.

So, after playing several hours. I can say that the game is good. But, it has a lot. And I mean a lot of flaws.

Lets start with the good.

1. It's NASA-punk. Its not cyberpunk or its not steampunk. It's got the whole space thing going on for it so if you ever fantasized being a astronaut wielding a shotgun or an AK47, this game has the looks and feel.
2. The diverse builds you can come up and play. The combinations you can create is quite fun to meddle around with. So if you wanna be a character that has improved skills in melee and get boosted stats if you are with no companions, and have more stats when you are in zero G, you can do that.
3. Gunplay is great. In fact its better than Fallout4 imo. If you have worries if the combat is bad, well no worries here.
4. There's an impressive crafting system. If you love collecting and farming for resources and then crafting them to useful items such as medicines and gun parts etc, this game has it.
5. Spaceship customization. You want a spaceship full decked out on firepower, you can. You want one that can carry more load and be tank as F, you can too.

Now the bad.

1. It has an extremely dull and slow start.
2. Most NPCs you meet are downright butt ugly and uninteresting.
3. YOU CANNOT BE A FULL FLEDGED BAD GUY. You cant! The game has so many restrictions. I wanted to be a astronaut bandit that is both a cannibal and a leader of a space pirate fleet. I was hoping to raid friendly space vessels and raid their loot and capture the passengers and sell them to be slaves.
How sad that a 1993 PC game called Wing Commander: Privateer lets you do that (the capture and selling your enemies as slaves btw) but a 2023 game wont let you. It's just like Fallout 4. It forces you to be good. F that. Games back then had the balls to let players do that. For shame.
4. Some places looks ugly as sin. The entrance to the Constellation Headquarters for example looks badly designed. Just thinking about it gives me a headache.
5. Uninteresting and boring dialogue. I tend to skip so much dialogue and only pay attention to speech checks cause listening to boring conversations and dialogue is just painful.
6. The fast traveling system is a joke. The UI just made it so messy, clunky and confusing.

And there you go. If you wanna play Fallout 4 but in space, Starfield is for you. I wont recommend buying it in full price if you want to play it in PC. But if you got an Xbox with Gamepass, try it out. You might sink in a couple of hundred hours on it.

Starfield, the most anticipated game for rpg fans alike. Bethesdas next massive RPG. Did it live up to the hype? Was it what we expected? Well I can't say for sure, I'm just one person, but with over 10 million people diving into the new IP and setting there mark on the universe, I think it's safe to say it's taken the hearts of many players.

I really have enjoyed my time with Starfield, I was having fun, and to me that's ultimately the whole point of a video game. So it achieved what it set out to do for me. I loved exploring, getting to know the characters, and learning about their backgrounds as well as choosing who to take with me on my ship to adventure into the unknown.

Some of the quests really went in a direction I didn't expect and I can honestly say I was very impressed and enveloped by what was going on.

I'm 100 hours in and have completed the campaign as well as most faction quest lines, I've been learning outposts as of late and that's been really cool and fun as well.

I will admit my first 5ish hours of Starfield were the most lack luster. There arnt many games, "if any" I would stick with hoping they get me interested, that long in, however I can confidently say it was worth it.

I'm looking forward to mod support for consoles. And I'm looking forward to exploring so much more that this game has to offer. I have a feeling that I havent even scratched the surface.

Finally is this game better than Skyrim? Well I have rated Skyrim an 11/10, after all its my favourite RPG ever. However Starfield, despite sharing similar mechanics is a diffrent game. I don't think its fair to compear them. Both are brilliant in there own ways.

If your on the edge about Starfield, I'd say jump in. Who knows, you may just find the next adventure you're looking for.

Happy adventuring :)
