That replacement is more maps and modes in competitive multiplayer and zombies, as well as something that you could sink a ton of hours into when it comes to Blackout if Battle Royale is your thing. It’s a bold move to remove something that’s been so fondly remembered and even more so when you consider that Treyarch was taking the most risks with Call of Duty campaigns, but the result is the ultimate Call of Duty multiplayer experience.
In pruning the campaign from its suite of modes, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has discovered a renewed focus on the nuts and bolts of what most players demand from Activision's undying shooter series. Blackout is a superb addition, in which Treyarch improves upon the battle royale formula, ensuring the gamble in losing single-player ultimately pays off.
This is the Call of Duty that Treyarch is known for. The story is still there, intertwined with lore about the multiplayer Specialists, but this drastic shift for the series has allowed Treyarch to pour far more resources into the parts of their game that keep fans coming back. Black Ops 4 might be missing a campaign, but it still feels like the most robust the series has ever been.
