About this game

Content Rating: Teen

Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom's storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. With a standalone story that also delves into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, players can enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed "ARCUS" system, and uncover dramatic events that stand to change everything these two opposing social classes stand for.

It’s been lovingly crafted by a team that clearly cared about the world it was building and then localized by a team that respected that world and delivered one of the best translations in a long while. It tackles tough, sensitive subjects in its narrative, all the while constructing a story that feels fun, compassionate, unique and all the more complete thanks to its large, yet superb, ensemble cast.

While the game does suffer from pacing issues and technical problems, the story builds up to this amazing climax that I can’t stop thinking about. Couple that with an amazing combat system and a killer soundtrack that had me practically leaping out of my chair in excitement, and I had a great time with Trails of Cold Steel. I wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone looking for a fantastic new JRPG to enjoy.

Trails of Cold Steel may not turn the genre on its head, but it does almost everything well. It is the first game in a trilogy, and Xseed has already confirmed the next game is coming to North America. After this delightful entry, I'm on board to see the next move.
