Thronefall, one of the most anticipated indie titles this year, has begun welcoming players into its kingdom.
German indie studio GrizzlyGames launched Thronefall into Early Access on August 2. And so far, gamers and critics have enjoyed it.
As of August 3, its gamerscore on Whatoplay is 9.3, based on over 350 reviews left on Steam. Critics have shared the same sentiments when playing Thronefall's Early Access version. One of them was Katherine Castle, editor-in-chief of the British video game journalism website Rock Paper Shotgun.
Castle said she "immensely enjoyed" the game. At the same time, she praised how the game can be challenging, even with its bright and welcoming colors.
Thronefall is a more minimalist take on the citybuilder tower defender, but while its bright colours might look like the distant cousin of a Townscaper toybox (it is, after all, made by the same dev wot did the equally charming Islanders), this deadly little thing is absolutely genius,
she wrote.
According to the developers, the Early Access edition of Thronefall might last between six and 12 months. Its duration will also depend on the amount of feedback and reception it gets from players.
The game's four playable levels and 36 unlockable perks and weapons are just the beginning. The developers have promised that the full version will have even more.
Thronefall is a strategy game that combines tower defense and city-building elements. In it, players need to build and fortify their kingdom's defenses during the day. As night falls, they must defend it from hordes of enemies.
The developers described it as a "minimalist strategy game".
Thronefall is a classic strategy game without unnecessary complexity, plus some healthy hack-and-slay,
they said. The game received wide attention when GrizzlyGames launched its demo last June. As a result, it has gained over 200,000 Wishlists on Steam.
