A brand new indie title that blends platforming with mountain climbing mechanics just made its debut.
Called Surmount, it is a game that promises to offer a refreshing take on the nature climbing genre. Surmount was developed by indie developers Jasper Oprel and Indiana-Jonas. The new Switch game hit devices on May 2.
Surmount takes players on a perilous ascent up the slopes of Mount Om. There, players will find themselves in a world full of hand-crafted challenges. As well as procedurally generated surprises.
The game also promises to break away from the 'sometimes-punishing' nature of climbing simulators. Surmount, according to its press kit, offers an "approachable physics-based climbing system."
This means players can focus on the joy of the climb itself, in their own pace. The game also gives them enough room to experiment with different techniques and find their own unique style to conquer the mountain.
The journey up Mount Om isn't just about the climb itself. Players will encounter a colorful cast of characters along the way. Each has their own motivations for reaching the summit. These "eccentric folks" add a layer of humor and intrigue to the adventure. Surmount supports single-player and local co-op modes.
The origins of Surmount began during the pandemic. The idea of a new, mountain-climbing game started in a virtual session of Animal Crossing, one of the best Switch games of 2020. Programmer Jasper Oprel and artist Indiana-Jonas' vision eventually impressed publishers. The prototype of what would become Surmount also became the first recipient of funding from the Dutch Midgame Fund.
The Dutch Midgame Fund is a program dedicated to supporting promising mid-sized game development projects.
Aside from Switch devices, Surmount can also be played on PC via Windows and macOS. It will carry a price tag of US$ 14.99. /
