The creators of Metro are adding another chapter in the hit, post-apocalyptic franchise.
During Sony's State of Play last Jan. 31, Vertigo Games and Deep Silver unveiled Metro Awakening.
The upcoming title will also be the first VR-enabled game in the Metro series. Officially releasing on PC and PS5, Metro Awakening will support the PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 2 and 3, and PC VR headsets. While no release date has been revealed, it is expected to make its debut this year.
Metro Awakening will be a standalone game, and a prequel to Metro 2033, publishers at Vertigo Games said.
It will feature an original lore from Dmitry Glukhovsky himself, the author of the Metro novel on which the games were based. Players will take the role of Serdar, a doctor searching for his wife in the aftermath of a nuclear war.
"This origins story is so essential to me," said Glukhovsky.
"It feels like returning to the foundations and roots of the series - now to the level that VR technology can bring," he added.
Development for Metro Awakening started two and half years ago, said Samar Louwe, Associate Game Director at Vertigo Games.
Vertigo Games also revealed the game's trailer, giving fans and interested players a first look into the newest Metro title. It showed Metro's iconic dark and dangerous tunnels of Moscow where mutants, bandits, and other threats lurk.
Like its predecessors, it will feature single-player, first-person shooter gameplay. But this time, players can expect a 'more visceral and heart-pounding' experience.
"With the addition of adaptive triggers and headset haptics on PS VR2, we were able to add tactile sensations to pulling our weapons’ triggers and getting hit by bullets. It’s nuances like these that push the level of immersion in VR even further on a visceral level," said Louwe.
Meanwhile, Metro Awakening is not the only Metro game in development. 4A Games also revealed they are working on the next mainline installment of the series. / ###
