Refract Studios has officially released Distance: Console Edition for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Distance blends the high-octane thrills of arcade racing with the fluidity of parkour.
A launch trailer is available to watch, check it out here:
At first glance, the game feels like a lovechild between Wipeout and Ghostrunner. It transports players into a dystopian and mysterious world where they embark on a single-player journey to uncover the secrets of the dark and neon-soaked city.
Gameplay involves adapting swiftly and utilizing their car’s abilities to jump, flip, and fly to navigate obstacles.
The game offers various modes such as Sprint, Challenge, and Stunt, with over 150 tracks to unlock. Players who prefer increasingly difficult challenges can enjoy its Trackmogrify feature. This enables them to experiment and experience infinite challenges with randomly-generated tracks.
Multiplayer is also a key feature in Distance. The couch multiplayer mode allows up to 4 players to engage in split-screen races or explore unique modes like Reverse Tag and Stunt.
This new-gen update emphasizes PlayStation 5’s DualSense support. This includes advanced haptic feedback which provides tactile immersion for every impact, scrape, skid, and car maneuver.
Distance has a rich history and a dedicated player base, boasting over 300,000 players on PC since its initial release. It was initially funded through Kickstarter in 2012, it then launched on Steam Early Access in December 2014. After four years, it achieved its 1.0 release in September 2018.
Its success was all thanks to Nitronic Rush, a spiritual successor created by Refract’s founders. Nitronic Rush has seen over 3 million downloads and was lauded for its innovative mechanics and atmosphere. These elements have been enhanced in Distance.
Distance: Console Edition is currently available on PlayStation 5 and 4, available for $19.99/ €19.99.
