GAMES OF THE YEAR

Games came at us fast. While there may have been disappointing launches, there were also a lot of hits. Even, a long-awaited redemption. What many thought would be a weak year became a stellar showing for both Triple-As and indie gems.

We beat mythical Chinese gods, redefined our human potential in a robot's playroom, exterminated bugs in the name of democracy, and emerged as unlikely heroes in a world of injustice. All this took risk, but if roguelike poker taught us anything, it's that sometimes, we can defy all odds.

2024 GAME OF THE YEAR

Let's kick things off with a bang! Of all the games this year, this game stood tall with an important message to impart. Take out the red carpet for…

PCPS5XSXPS4
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Developed by Studio Zero
A crown fit for a king. Metaphor: ReFantazio take our top spot as this year's Game of the Year. It is a culmination of the best parts of the Shin Megami Tensei titles, all while integrating modern Persona mechanics into one fantastic JRPG.
BEST GAMES BY PLATFORM

Wherever you're playing, on consoles or mobile, 2024 has been raining great games far and wide. Let's check out the best of them:

9.4
Balatro
Developed by LocalThunk
A dopamine rush first, a roguelike card game second. Balatro cleverly twists the genre with a dash of poker and unpredictability — into something unusually perfect. Even if card games aren't your thing, the thrill of building game-breaking multipliers and watching those numbers skyrocket is undeniably addictive.
9.6
Astro Bot
Developed by Team Asobi
After a decade of service, PlayStation's poster child gets what it deserved: the top spot. Astro Bot's voyage into the stars, as well as its first dip into the triple-A realm, resulted in a vibrant and fluid 3D platformer that can even rival Nintendo's best. This is a love-letter to PlayStation players, spiced up by clever inclusions of easter eggs and cameos from other iconic gaming franchises.
9.5
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Developed by Studio Zero
While it's no Game Pass title, ATLUS' Metaphor earns this year's Xbox crown amidst the many other games on the console. Former Persona developers crafted a one-shot JRPG teeming with memorable characters and a timeless tale about the issues that plague our society. Metaphor instills hope in an uncertain future, all packed inside a game.
9.3
Unicorn Overlord
Developed by Vanillaware
Vanillaware's mastery of genre-bending JRPGs found a new frontier in tactical strategy. While the story isn't up-to-par compared to its peers, Unicorn Overlord shines with how it intuitively blends the mechanics of Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics. It took over the Nintendo Switch throne from even its biggest titles this year.
8.9
Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance TD
Developed by Ironhide Game Studio
More than a decade later, Ironhide Studios' tower defense series is still going strong. Yes, there are new towers, levels, and heroes… but the core mechanics haven't changed much. It's mostly the same ol' Kingdom Rush we're familiar with — flaws and all.
9.5
Balatro
Developed by LocalThunk
This may be the best 10 dollars you're going to spend on the App Store. I just have to warn you, though. Again, it's very addicting. So much so that I have lost sleep trying to successfully finish a run. On the bright side, Balatro takes you off your late-night doom-scrolling, which is a win in my book!

No Man's Sky
Developed by Hello Games

When Gaben said, 'Late is just for a little while, suck is forever.' Hello Games got an exemption. It took 8 years of hard work, unrivaled commitment to their players, and hundreds of updates, patches, and fixes. They finally did it, now, No Man's Sky's billions of planets are worthy of exploring.. And for that we offer this special award.

South Park: Snow Day!
Developed by Question

The game's baffling design choices drew flak as players expected more from the franchise after the successes of Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole. Its multiplayer elements were fun for a short while, but the overall feel of this brawler felt so lackluster it does not feel like a game that Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny would even enjoy.

Most Disappointing
We had such high hopes, but it just didn't deliver.

Concord
Developed by Firewalk Studios

Firewalk's ambitious hero-shooter was a high-profile blunder. It left an indelible stain on Sony's reputation and a big 400 million dollar hole in their pocket. Forever haunted by the ghost of this multiplayer FPS that came out a little too late to join and cash in on the genre's heights.

Homeworld 3
Developed by Blackbird Interactive

One contentious topic in gaming is the divide between critic and gamer opinions. Nowhere is this more obvious than in Homeworld 3. It received an average critic score of 7.6; meanwhile, the game sits at 38% on Steam. Yes, the game looks good but it lost the strategic depth of the first two releases. And don't even get me started on the campaign.

Sleeper Hit
An amazing game that seemed to come out of nowhere.

Balatro
Developed by LocalThunk

Balatro's nomination to the Game Awards surprised the community, many of whom hadn't even heard of the game. How can a card game be this good? The answer is the 150 Jokers that make Balatro an unpredictable stack of numbers. The game didn't care if you love or hate Poker, all it needed to do was to see how you react when numbers go up and up. And it worked.

Even with all its busywork and bloated open-world content, Rebirth is a game built for the fans that saw through VII's evolution over the years.

This is one crazy mix of old-school shooter and roguelike, with a good dose of 80s vibe. The gameplay is lightning fast, with tons of guns, combos, and special moves to master. It has a bloody, addictive gameplay loop that some say can get repetitive. But for the price, it's one helluva way to blast that fps itch.
