SOULVARS is a futuristic mix of a jRPG and a deck builder, where we fight demonic creatures using a deck of cards produced by the gear we equip.
Alex Sem · May 13, 2024 Reviewed on iOSRead full reviewSOULVARS is a fantastic pixel-art arcade action game. It has very few problems, surprisingly, for being the first title released by ginolabo on Steam. Developers have done a wonderful job in streamlining both the combat and the adventure. With all the wonderful things it does have, it is a shame that there is no journal to keep track of quests. It is not a bad price for what it offers its players. There is always a demo for those who like to try before they buy.
Juan Carlos Ortiz · Jul 10, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewHonestly, the biggest sin of SOULVARS is its lack of context, but even that wouldn’t make a confession. Again, you can tell this is a game that Ginolabo was just so happy and excited to be making, and what strengths SOULVARS – the flair, the fluidity, the feel and the fascination stemming from its ludicrously dense narrative – are signs of blind passion more than foolish oversights.
SAMIEE "GUTTERPUNK" TEE · Jul 01, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full reviewSOULVARS is best described as a “tsundere” game. Its mechanics are tough and intimidating at first, but investing a little time and effort getting to know it opens its heart. You get out of it what you put into it. Beyond its 10–15 hour main campaign (depending on the difficulty level), there is post-game content. Sadly, the disappointing story and characters are a mountain of unrealized potential that could have been so much better.
Neal Chandran · Jul 01, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewSOULVARS is a complex video game dedicated to fans of classic Japanese role-playing games and, especially, to those who love their deep combat systems. Newcomers might find combat hard to comprehend but the game does offer the resources to understand the mechanics and use them in cool ways.
Andrei Dumitrescu · Jun 28, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewSoulvars is fast and addictive, but the repetitive nature of the gameplay and the limited tutorials makes experiencing the best parts of this game more effort than they’re worth. It has the style and energy to keep your attention for a few moments, but it doesn’t last when the character writing and world-building lay in an optional encyclopedia than in the game’s story. Still, this game is all about speed and combat, and it delivers in that regard.
Azario Lopez · Jun 23, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewOverall, the gameplay mechanics of SOULVARS were enjoyable, but the story is repetitive and the characters and story felt lacking. If you enjoy deck-builders, this should be up your alley, but if you’re here for the narrative I would look elsewhere.
Bex Prouse · Jul 30, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewSOULVARS tries its best to create a unique world and theme, yet falters, and has to rely heavily on the turn-based action instead. The Soulbits and corresponding Arts make for a very intriguing combat system that’s incredibly fun to experiment with. Overcoming the toughest battles poses a great tactical challenge too. Unfortunately, the narrative failings, steep learning curve, and exploration drawbacks really hamper the rest of proceedings.
James Birks · Jul 27, 2023 Reviewed on XB1Read full reviewSoulVars is a great console port of a mobile game, but it doesn’t quite do a good enough job of keeping you hooked whilst playing. The combat system is exceptional by being and rewarding albeit a little grind. Unfortunately, the story and influence are left as set dressing.
Joshua Thompson · Jul 08, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full reviewSoulvars is a pixel art JRPG that’s definitely not a deckbuilder, no matter what the synopsis tells you. It’s beautiful to look at and fun to play once you get to grips with it.
