To be short, it is a breath of fresh air compared to its prequels.

Pokemon Sun

This game was one of the best games of the franchise (not to mention best-selling) It was the refreshment the fans needed from the long saga of the Gym challenge.

Pros:

* The graphics of the game of the astounding for the 3DS. It really pushed the 3DS past its limits.
* The story of this game was amazing. It had an interesting and intriguing plot which wasn't seen to this level in the franchise since the Unova games. It was extremely coherent. Moreover the 'Villain Team' of this game was just a meagre entryway to the real villains of the game- The Aether Foundation. This kind of plot twist was what Pokefans were begging for years to receive.
* The character arcs in the game were superb too. It really fleshed out everyone in the game, especially Lillie and Gladion.
* The Island Challenge was the best alterative to Gym challenge. It made the Alola games stand out from the rest of the series. It was one a breath of fresh air for veterans.
* Character customisation also made a return in this game was implemented in a decent way.
* The 'Champion' title in this game really meant something to the player since you were the fist champion of your region and had to defend your title against others. It was a completely novel idea to have: that instead of beating the champion, you become them.
* Other quality of life changes were added too. The most significant one being the abolishment of the HM system. Gone were the need for HM Mules. Ride Pokemon got rid of the most hated feature in the series and thankfully it continued onto the succeeding games. The new in-battle system helped to guide newer players to type matchups and stat changes. This was a very welcome feature. Pokemon refresh was the also much more better than Pokemon Amie and it helped with raising affection stats.
* Like all Pokemon games, it has great re-playability

Cons:

* The game could feel too easy since the Exp. share was given early on the player. This, combined with the affection stats made the game's difficulty level low.
* The character customisation feature could have been worked on a bit more since that would have taken full advantage of the improved graphics.
* During the resource-heavy areas and action-packed moves can make the game lag a bit. This was to be expected with the 3DS' capabilities. This is more noticeable in the sequels: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
* The cutscenes can be too long with the intricate plot, so the game can feel slow on your second playthroughs.
* The Z-move mechanic received mixed-reviews due to the fact that it could either make the game too easy or too hard.

The Alola region provided fans with a break from the Gym challenge and it was important. It allowed the series to adapt to changing playstyles of gamers all over. Although you shouldn't start this out as your first Pokemon game, this should definitely be in your collection.
