  • Matchpoint - Tennis Championships has all the makings of becoming a spectacular tennis game in a given time. Even though the AI lacks depth, the gameplay is still entertaining and captivating. It has the potential to be a much more captivating game in future updates or releases if all the issues are addressed to improve the overall experience.

  • Matchpoint - Tennis Championships is the most authentic tennis experience in modern gaming, and a game with great potential shouldn't go to waste.

  • The animations and atmosphere in the tennis stadiums are well done. Hitting a shot feels satisfying. But, overall the game is too easy and one dimensional. There is a great tennis game in there somewhere, but the developers haven’t been able to capitalize on the opportunity.

  • Matchpoint: Tennis Championships manages to release a game that presents an easy yet technical approach to the sport. It results in a game where you can make more mistakes than the more arcade-like approach of some older, well regarded tennis titles, but it results in a game that feels more responsive compared to most of its contemporaries.

  • Matchpoint Tennis Championships is a game of two halves. While the actual moment-to-moment gameplay feels great thanks to well-implemented mechanics and challenging AI, everything supporting that structure is half-baked.

  • Matchpoint – Tennis Championships is a fun tennis game. It is presented well and offers intuitive controls that are easy to pick up. Unfortunately, that charm wears off quickly due to the game’s lack of complexity and unchallenging gameplay. It doesn’t take long to be able to win every match, at which point you have nothing to work towards.

  • Matchpoint: Tennis Championships deserves your attention on Xbox Game Pass, as it's genuinely one of the better Xbox tennis games we've seen in years. It has its drawbacks, particularly in the presentation department, but it's also good fun when you get out on the court. Unfortunately, some of that enjoyment has been taken away for us because even on the highest difficulty, the game just feels far too easy at launch, rendering a lot of the strategic elements and Career Mode's features somewhat useless for now. It's still a pretty good game regardless, but definitely in need of a couple of balancing tweaks over the coming weeks and months.

Matchpoint Tennis Championships serves up a smooth-playing and simple-to-control game of tennis – to the point where you have to go out of your way to miss a shot – but saddles it with a career mode that’s so lacking in spectacle and any sense of meaningful progression that it almost made me wish I’d taken a desk job instead. Multiplayer matches are more dynamic but noticeably light on options, and the complete lack of doubles play severely diminishes any appeal it may have had for game night gatherings on the couch. There’s a solid baseline to build on in the future, but Matchpoint Tennis Championships ultimately feels like a tentative first serve for the series.

  • What it has made here could be considered impressive, in a way, considering its lack of expertise in this genre, because it’s not entirely incompetent. The tennis does play fairly realistically and there is a rhythm to it that did remind me of Virtua Tennis 2 at times. But I'm not sure that you'll want to spend your hours with this game, because it’ll seem like time will slow down to a crawl.

  • It might not exactly be a pretty game when it comes to its presentation, nor does it feature the most robust of rosters, but Matchpoint Tennis Championships nails the essentials. With regards to its gameplay, I haven’t played a tennis game like this since the golden days of Top Spin for the original Xbox. As a tennis enthusiast, I was salivating for a game like this for many years. It lets me play and come up with strategies on the fly, just like I’d do in real life. Whether you decide to tackle a career or just play a quick arcade match, Matchpoint Tennis Championships delivers. It’s one grand slam of a game.
