Visually, the HD remaster looks nice. The game has gotten an impressive glow-up, and for the most part, the characters and environments look quite good. It still has a bit of that "HD remaster" feel, but it stands out less in this game than in some of the other titles I've covered. The sound work is excellent and does a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to spooking you, and more than once, I was more frightened by a creak than a howling ghost.
Chris "Atom" DeAngelus · Mar 28, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full reviewFATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a fun entry in the series that can now also be enjoyed on the current generation of platforms. The game has a lot going for it, such as its very creepy atmosphere and overall enjoyable gameplay loop. Sadly, it gets bogged down by horrendous controls and an extremely slow pace.
Ibuki · Mar 24, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewTo sum it all up, Fatal Frame/Project Zero The Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a wonderful game to enjoy, be it your first time or every successive run as you go for full completion. The gameplay is great, the atmosphere really draws you in and leaves a great mark on you, and the visuals on the areas are well done, all wrapped up in one great package.
Ray Remigio · Mar 16, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewIn the end, Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is nice to see. I love that the series is making a comeback. I just wish we could get the original trilogy on modern consoles. Those games are lost to time and would benefit from just a remaster at this point. Still more survival horror is always welcome and we are truly living in an embarrassment of riches in the genre.
Ken McKown · Mar 15, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full reviewProject Zero: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is the unholy offspring of Pokémon Snap and The Haunting of Hill House, which is quite the elevator pitch. The story may be lackluster and the awkward controls belie its vintage, but the moment-to-moment scares, framed through the lens of grainy, ghost-hunter photography, are exemplary.
Josh Wise · Mar 15, 2023 Reviewed on PC, PS5, Series X|S, PS4, XB1, SwitchRead full reviewSurvival horror fans, and fans of the broader Fatal Frame series, will find a lot to like about the remake of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse after the over a decade-long wait. The classic photography-based gameplay and story of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse make it one of the best in the series, and, with any luck, further Fatal Frame remakes or a continuation of the series will result from this release.
Maria Meluso · Mar 14, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewFATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse's unique combat, compelling story, and memorable cast of characters ensure that the game will appeal to new and veteran survival horror players. While newcomers to the Fatal Frame series may not admire its gameplay, long-time series fans will simply adore it.
Rayan · Mar 09, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full reviewThe atmosphere does a lot of heavy lifting for the game because despite this being a remaster of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, the visuals look like they did not receive much of an update. Character models look fine and ghost designs are inspired, but seeing the environments up close gives a stark reminder as to how old the game is, looking incredibly pixilated and rough by contemporary standards. They look fine from afar, but it feels like more could have been done to update them while keeping the original atmosphere as superb as it is.
Andrea Gonzalez · Mar 09, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full reviewMovement is janky, the camera never quite feels spot on, and the loading between rooms really shouldn't be an issue in 2023. Additionally, the frequent presence of ghosts and the arcade-like combat required to defeat them feels constantly at odds with the otherwise impressive sense of dread felt as you explore the environment, but since this is a core aspect of the series at large, you might be able to overlook this.
Ollie Reynolds · Mar 08, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full reviewFatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse starts off extremely slow, and then it ends slow. You’re only truly let off the leash for a portion in the middle of the game. However, despite all the drawbacks I could continually bang on about, it did eventually grow on me. It’s a quiet, isolated horror experience.

About the game
「FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse」 is the traditional Japanese horror adventure game. As the girls explore the western-style mansions and abandoned hospitals on Rōgetsu Isle, they will rely on the moonlight and a faint flashlight to search for clues. The story progresses by discovering relics like old newspaper articles and notes that help the girls unravel the island’s secret past. While exploring, the girls will also be confronted by a series of spirits. They will need to use a Fatal Frame franchise classic, the Camera Obscura, to repel vengeful ghosts, sealing away their power by photographing them. Throughout the game, the girls will need to equip stronger lenses and change out different films in order to capture the most powerful spirits, while also using the camera to capture “things that cannot be seen” to help them find the evidence they need to remember their haunting past.
