Wargroove certainly packs an impressive portion of diverse content, but its harsh difficulty, together with its complexity, has a tendency of muddying the water. Nevertheless, if you can overlook Wargroove’s taxing challenge and bear with it long enough to understand its varied functionality, there’s a lot to like about it, especially if you’re a fan of strategy games.
Wargroove is the Advance Wars successor its long-neglected fans have been waiting for. It faithfully revives the tactics I loved that series for while putting plenty of its own spins on the concept. Campaign levels do have a tendency to go on longer than they should considering its lack of mid-match saving outside of being able to quit and pick back up where you were later.
Wargroove is far from perfect, but that doesn’t change the fact that Chucklefish has managed to recreate the same feeling of the Advanced War series, all while improving and making it stand out on its own. Wargroove is the closet thing we’ve seen to an Advanced Wars title in a long time and the amount of love and care put into making the title are clear from the very start.
