About this game

Content Rating: Teen

The Spectrum Retreat is a challenging, first-person puzzle game set in the near future. You awake at The Penrose hotel, a peaceful yet unsettling refuge from the outside world. As a valued guest, your existence is embedded into the corridors and guest rooms of The Penrose. Exploration of the striking art-deco hotel will begin to uncover the mysteries of both The Penrose and the uncertainties surrounding your current stay. Your desire to unearth the truth is obstructed by an array of colour coded puzzles, mind-bending physics challenges and the growing fear of exposing your true intentions.

At its core, The Spectrum Retreat has a tragic story about a family cast aside by the American health care system. That much becomes apparent early on, but the finer details are hidden behind too many consecutive puzzles. There's a narrative worth hearing here, but the cadence at which it's told is just a little bit off. That, mixed with the good-but-not-outstanding puzzle design, keeps The Spectrum Retreat from being a truly great stay.

You can get stuck at certain parts without a way out, having to restart the entire level because you made one wrong decision is infuriating, and a very common occurrence in this game. If you have a itch for a first-person puzzle game this will probably fulfill your needs. However, if you are looking for a good storyline there are better options. Considering the price it isn’t really too bad of a choice for about 5 hours of fun.

After our first glimpse at The Spectrum Retreat we were cautiously excited but still unsure about how the experience would translate into a fully-formed experienced. Now, after having sat down with the finished article we found ourselves reflecting on whether the final product lived up to that early potential. The answer: absolutely, in fact, our expectations have been thoroughly surpassed.
