The Evil Within has great moments where the excellent combat and creepy environmental design come together. But those moments are fleeting, inevitably sapped of their delightful terror by design choices that feel trapped in the glory days of a decade ago. There's something to be said for respecting your past successes and building off of them, but The Evil Within is only ever completely successful at half of that equation.

Granted, it creates a nightmarish atmosphere and will whet anyone’s appetite for an excessive amount of blood and guts. I experienced many scares and might have even pooped my pants a bit. Yet in the end a lacklustre storyline, uninteresting characters, clunky combat and far too many frustrating sequences hold “The Evil Within” back from being considered one of the greats.

But if Mikami had sought to innovate when it came to its design and story, then The Evil Within wouldn’t have felt so much like an also-ran experience. At times it resembles the work of an imitator rather than the man himself, but The Evil Within is nonetheless an entertaining and engaging horror tale.
