It's not perfect: there aren't enough stages, some of the levels (such as the wrecking ball mission) aren't great, and sometimes it's tough to discern what is actually happening, given the amount of nonsense on screen (of which it must be said that the engine holds up phenomenally well). But I enjoyed the hours I spent playing it much more than the considerably longer time I had with the campaign.

All the comparisons pointed to ahead of release really are valid here: Ratchet & Clank for the weapons, Jet Set Radio for the traversal and Crackdown for the collectibles. Thankfully it’s easy to ignore the awful characters and crappy humour in favour of just having a good time with the gameplay itself.
Jim SterlingOct 27, 2014
While there's obviously plenty of room for your grim, dark, militarized war games, it's refreshing to see something so irreverent, bright, and silly. Maybe Insomniac overdid it in the screwball department, but I'll take that over another Fuse. ...While its commitment to madness can be maddening itself, Sunset Overdrive is an energetic, fun-focused adventure. The jokes don't always hit home, but this is a game that loves being a game, and you can't hate that sort of honesty.
Chris CarterOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive may have a few flaws inherent to many open-world games and lacks an engaging narrative, but it's an incredibly fun, vibrant game that's a nice break from the overly gritty tone we see far too often in today's market. After Fuse, this is exactly what Insomniac Games needed.
Eric L. PattersonOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive may not be destined to receive the same kind of attention or hype fellow Xbox One releases like Halo: The Master Chief Collection or Titanfall have, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the most creative, enjoyable, endearing, or satisfying gaming options the console has to offer.
Brad ShoemakerOct 31, 2014
This is an great debut for Insomniac on a new console, and it's great to see the developer of Ratchet & Clank getting back to a lot of colorful nonsense after focusing on Fuse and Resistance for so long. There's some room for growth in a few spots if this turns into a franchise, as it probably will, but this first effort is already a good solid reason to own an Xbox One, and one of the stronger open-world games released this year.
Andrew ReinerOct 27, 2014
Cooperatively battling the OD can be a bit overwhelming given the insanity erupting onscreen, but it is satisfying to lock down the perimeter with a group. ...Outside of the mission monotony, Sunset Overdrive is an immensely rewarding experience that has a look and style all its own and a great gameplay package to complement it. It’s a colorful return to form for Insomniac games, and a hell of an exclusive for Xbox One.
Arthur GiesOct 27, 2014
As a collection of mechanics and ideas, Sunset Overdrive is an impressive evolution of things Insomniac has been doing for a long time. Every part of Sunset Overdrive hooks into every other part somehow, and often in multiple ways, and it makes the whole shooting, grinding, wall-running package better for it. But the best thing about Sunset Overdrive is how it's unabashedly enthusiastic about what it is, in just about every way. That enthusiasm, and the freedom behind it, is contagious.
Andrew StretchNov 04, 2014
Sunset Overdrive is a game that never takes itself too seriously and understands what it is, there were many moments playing through this game that dialogue, references or mechanics had me laughing out loud. At first I was afraid of the traversal being too slow from early videos but after playing I found this was completely the opposite. If you want to play this as a perfectionist then it’s perfectly attainable and if you want to just play through the story you’re not missing out on anything.
Peter BrownOct 27, 2014
Insomniac Games has crafted an excellent game in Sunset Overdrive. It's not without a few niggling issues, but you'll be too busy enjoying yourself to care. ...you'll never think of it as anything but a singular achievement that stands tall on its own merits. It's one of the best games on the Xbox One, and a refreshing shot of merriment.
William SchwartzOct 27, 2014
It’s important that we’re continuing to see games like Sunset Overdrive. Games that take risks and try new things are few and far between these days, but console exclusives are a great spot to try new stuff. Sunset Overdrive makes a strong case for owning an Xbox One, if not just to see all the beautiful madness Insomniac has eeked out of the hardware.
Adam BeckOct 27, 2014
There are few games like Sunset Overdrive. It’s a comical, highly diverse shooter that has a strong focus on being fun rather than realistic. While the fetch quests are overly aggressive and the music will occasionally cut out at the oddest of times, there’s still a lot here to love. ...All in all, Sunset Overdrive is a breath of fresh air in a stagnant, overpopulated marketplace of gritty shooters.
Jeff GrubbOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive is a really good time. If you also regularly run with an online crew that enjoys a good “us versus waves of baddies” modes, you will likely get even more mileage out of it. The look, feel, and sound won me over. Forgiving the mission structure and forgetting the tower-defense junk, this is pretty much what I would expect from an action shooter for this console generation. And it doesn’t hurt that “combat Tony Hawk” is a brilliant idea that someone should’ve thought up long ago.
Lucas SullivanOct 27, 2014
You've never explored an open world quite like this. Sunset Overdrive's iffy gunplay and inconsistent missions are redeemed by absolutely amazing mobility and an infectious enthusiasm for mayhem.
Ben MooreOct 27, 2014
There’s a lot of greatness within Sunset Overdrive, but it’s obfuscated by a lack of difficulty and an aggravating tone. Ultimately, it’s worth dealing with the game’s worst moments to enjoy the many things it does get right. When you’re darting around the world like a ninja in a denim jacket, there’s nothing quite like it. If there is a next time for Sunset City, and hopefully there is, maybe things will come together more smoothly than they have here.
S. PrellOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive sets out to create a world where the apocalypse is fun instead of depressing, and that means putting control in the player's hands. ...More importantly, it gives players a plethora of choices in how they look, what weapon they use and how they play, and then makes every single possible combination feel vindicated. Nothing goes to waste in the awesome-pocalypse, and everyone's invited to Sunset City's after-party.
Mike WilliamsOct 28, 2014
Sunset Overdrive is a welcome change of pace from the dour, serious AAA games we've been playing all year. Insomniac asks "who do you want to be?" with tons of customization options, some great weapons, and a very physical way to get around the city. The game feels a bit light in the content department, but it's undeniably fun.
Daniel BischoffOct 24, 2014
Sunset Overdrive doesn’t take itself seriously, making the action and character of the game stand out about as much as its vibrant color scheme. Sequences that slightly alter gameplay or offer a big boss manage to delight beyond most of what’s available on the latest consoles today. If I couldn’t recommend the game to you based on its intense sense of motion or wild enemy and environment design, then I’d say the third-person shooter combat and unique upgrades will do the trick.

In among the density and neediness however there's a good game. One that's shamelessly focused on the fun of pinging around a city with an arsenal of ricocheting insanity guns, and so intent on being entertaining that it's endearing even when it doesn't work. There are fantastic moments where everything aligns perfectly, and even when it falls flat through over-effort the basic action is still a rewarding and noisy mess.
Jason FanelliOct 27, 2014
Most important of all, Sunset Overdrive is a ton of fun no matter how I decided to play. It has some issues, mostly with the parkour giving me fits at times, but the rest of the package more than makes up for it. Rock on, Sunset City.
Dave LetcavageOct 29, 2014
Want to know how to make a truly great game? Provide players with a liberating and energetic method of traversal, create an eye-popping urban environment that serves as a massive playground, and do everything you can to promote uninhibited fun within that space. That’s the essence of Sunset Overdrive, and it’s why we think this is arguably the best new IP so far this console generation.

It is fun, and that is the most important aspect of any game for me nowadays. I spent double-digit hours exploring the city, collecting items, and simply destroying anything in my path, and I can’t wait to do more. That speaks volumes about a game, and Sunset Overdrive is certainly not one to be missed this holiday season.
Mitchell SaltzmanOct 27, 2014
But honestly, if having a resolution of 900p, a framerate of 30 FPS, and some slight framerate hiccups in rare moments of multiplayer are Sunset Overdrive’s biggest flaws, I think that’s pretty damn good. ...You can tell that Insomniac had a blast making this game, and that joy transferred directly into me as I bounced on balloons in an amusement park, on to the rails of a rollercoaster, and then rained down explosive hairspray bombs to result in a brilliant orange explosion of goo.

Sunset Overdrive is big, gorgeous, and a hell of a lot of fun. Never has getting from point A to point B in an open-world game provided so much enjoyment. It provides some of the most fun, frantic, and fantastic gaming I've had on the Xbox One. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to once-again adorn my wolf mask, leap off the highest ledge I can find, and fire an explosive stuffed animal at that group of angry robots.

Sunset Overdrive has so many amazing moments that I could just fill this entire review with them. It is hilarious, chaotic, stupid, brash, intelligent, explosive, and empowering, and revels in it at every opportunity. If everyone thought Master Chief would carry the Xbox One’s fortunes, then they’ve got another thing coming.
Steve WattsOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive is a very different kind of game for Insomniac, but it trades well on all the experiences that brought the studio here. Fans will recognize its knack for inventive weaponry and nicely-designed traversal, but the two haven't been joined in this way before. Those elements make this rebellious teen something special that even its sometimes overwrought attitude can't dampen.
Kirby YablonskiOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive is a game that attacks so many senses, in a good way, that you may just find yourself not wanting to stop playing. From the visual art style, the amount of things to do on your own, to the multiplayer experience that carries over your progress into your single player story, this game just seems to get a lot of things right.
Matt WalkerOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive is the freshest game of the year, and if you aren’t excited to play it then there will be tons of mundane repeaters coming out soon enough to keep you busy. For those of you looking for a little more than the norm, Sunset Overdrive is the game you’ve been waiting for.
Adam CookOct 27, 2014
When all is said and done, Sunset Overdrive doesn’t feel like anything else I’ve played in ages. It’s a real breath of fresh air to travel around an open world with such wild abandon, and the variety of enemies combines with the general movement to make fun the most important aspect of the whole package. It never feels a chore to play, and although the fourth-wall breaking and sense of humour won’t be to everyone’s tastes, this is a game that any Xbox One owner should give a go.
VGChartz StaffOct 31, 2014
Sunset Overdrive is not really innovative, nor is it particularly tactical. However, if there is one thing I can say with absolute certainty it is that Sunset Overdrive is crazy fun. It's over the top, colourful, vivid, fast-paced, humorous, light-hearted and genuinely captivating throughout. It's great to see Insomniac return to form and create a game entirely about invigorating the player and not ruining your enjoyment with a ham-fisted story or unnecessary realism.
Christian DonlanOct 27, 2014
This is clearly the product of a team in its mid-thirties, and I feel their pain as they parade their faded cultural touchstones. ...Beneath the glorious tech, and once the writing relaxes a little, Sunset Overdrive's wonderfully lurid and heartfelt - a bit like playing an old 4AD album sleeve. If you get that reference, you'll probably get this, too.
Ingo DelingerOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive has all the flash and dynamic of a brand-new arcade machine. It also holds close the virtues of the arcade scene in its presentation and gameplay, and is as much akin to the likes of Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi, but still has all the polish and additions expected of a modern day video game. This is just a really beautiful and fun arcade-like experience.
Matthew CastleOct 28, 2014
This isn't the temporary rush of a sugary gulp, but a can of ideas shaken and shaken until it explodes in glorious mess. Apocalypse now? Nah, in Sunset City, good things come to those that wait. The wackiness never clicks, but the relentless combat momentum certainly does. It won't change the world, but does a very good job of splattering it with mutant blood.
Bryan CalhounOct 27, 2014
Sunset Overdrive is fun and it deserves the time of anyone who is willing to play an open world game populated with references that flip between 30 year old movies and modern day memes. Most of the game’s elements or mechanics are good separately, but no single element/mechanic is strong enough to carry the game on its back. Luckily the parts come together to create a decent contraption worth sitting down and experiencing.
JickleOct 29, 2014
Sunset Overdrive may not be the deepest experience, but it’s a game that shows evidence of immaculate craft. Insomniac Games have always been good at excess, but Sunset Overdrive manages to take a series of absurd ideas and concepts and render them coherent, giving you a playground that constantly rewards your actions.
Alan BellOct 27, 2014
As an Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive is a real coup for Microsoft, a must-buy for anyone with the system, and for those without as good a reason as any to consider acquiring one. Bright, humorous, and engaging presentation. Weird and entertaining arsenal. A game that's happy to be a game. Serviceable story. Quality multiplayer.
