Stranger of Sword City is the definition of niche title. The gorgeous art style and in-depth combat really stand out, but the intense difficulty is definitely a large barrier to entry. That said, those with patience will find a lot of reward in this adventure. Dungeon crawlers are rare, and even more so on Xbox consoles, and this one is definitely worth unwrapping for players that have the time and patience.
While my experiences with Demon Gaze are limited, I would still count for Stranger of Sword City as much of the same thing. This serves Sword City fine, as it improves upon its predecessor and differentiates just enough on its own to feel new and worth its time. While it has one glaring issue in particular, this isn’t enough to count it out of your library. Stranger of Sword City on Xbox One offers an experience to console owners mostly reserved for the 3DS and Vita now. Experience has the dungeon crawler formula down, and their gradual incline in quality is a promise of great potential for reinvigorating the genre.
Stranger of Sword City takes the thirty year old first-person dungeon crawling formula and tweaks it enough to make it feel fresh. While the game lacks personality in the storytelling and character interaction departments, it stands head and shoulders above what its genre contemporaries are doing.
