Looking through my review notes felt like I was reading the journal of an increasingly depressed individual. There's amazing praise at first but that quickly turns to frustration, irritation, and even anger at times. With that said, I'd recommend Sea of Solitude for the school chapter alone. The entire adventure is also only a few hours long so thankfully, it won't overstay its welcome.

Sea of Solitude offers a surprisingly deep adventure that not only toys with perception, but inadvertently encourages you to look inside yourself. Whilst the gameplay would have benefited from a bit more depth, what’s present is well balanced, well varied, and well paced. Collectively, this makes for a massively involved journey that showcases its developer’s heart remarkably. Whilst slightly flawed, Sea of Solitude is unlike anything else.

A wondrous world and keenly felt themes are slighted by unsubtle writing.

I’m torn on Sea of Solitude. I don’t know what score to give it even. I can’t say I love the game because I definitely don’t. I don’t hate it either. It has also been on my mind constantly since I finished it and that must mean something. Maybe I’m just too rooted in my own depression to understand this game. I’m not sure. Ultimately I’m giving this the same score I gave GRIS because I would find it unfair to give it anything lower or anything higher and I feel obligated to give it some score.

Sea of Solitude gives you a beautiful world and an intriguing story but the gameplay fails to evolve enough to make this a compelling adventure.

Ultimately, Sea of Solitude is a worthwhile though inelegant conversation piece on the dark recesses of our often self-deprecating minds. Visually, its vibrant and unique world would be enough on its own to serve the game's laundry list of metaphors. The voiceover and dialogue then only get in the way by spelling it all out in unsatisfying ways. Still, if this is your first stop at the intersection of games and mental health, or if you know someone who needs to hear what Sea of Solitude has to say, it's certainly worth leaving the shore.

In conclusion, this next entry in the ‘EA Originals’ catalogue has a fascinating premise but doesn’t build upon it in a meaningful way.  From Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice to The Town of Light, there’s a rising tide of stimulating game concepts examining mental health, which I applaud, but that alone does not a great game make.  The title Sea of Solitude is inappropriate.  Whether in respect of its derivative gameplay structure or the bumper-sticker approach to an otherwise-sincere message, it doesn’t go any deeper than the wading pool.

To recap, this EA title doesn't quite live up to our expectations, even though there's a somewhat timeless and romantic aura around Kay's psychological expedition. Upon starting the game up, it's almost mesmerising to steer Kay into uncharted waters, but after meeting the first big monster it almost feels like the story concludes - a story that, by the way, had potential to actually yank the heartstrings of players everywhere.

While these sections certainly feel quite different from one another, they’re overly repetitive and are drawn out for far too long. They feel like they’re in place at times to lengthen the game, and ultimately detract from the narrative both Jo-Mei and EA are adamant form the core of the game. Despite this, Sea of Solitude is as unique as it is charming, and certainly a title to check out if you’re looking for a break from looter shooters and multiplayer.

Celkovo je Sea of Solitute pôsobivou cestou do ľudských vzťahov v parádnom vizuálnom prevedení a aj so zaujímavými hernými mechanikami.
