Ruiner succeeds upon completion though. The second outing feels like the balance the game should have had, and it is a lot more fun. For players willing to suffer through it once, it almost makes up for the tedium. The problem arises once again in that there are so many games out there that work on the first try. Maybe the developers will patch out the issues, and if so Ruiner is a great idea with some truly questionable mechanics that make it a chore to play more often than it should.

By the time I fought Mother for the third and last time, I was prepared to throw my controller because of how quickly she evaporated my energy and health bars the first two times. Ruiner is one of those games that is unabashedly difficult for the sake of being difficult. It demands you face waves upon waves of the same enemies and mini-bosses before you can even see the final, incredibly trite cinematic. Are you the ruiner or the ruined? I won’t spoil the answer that the game offers up, but I will say that I sure didn’t feel triumphant when I finally set the controller down.

Ruiner can be a disturbing, frustrating and exhausting game at times, but when you finally get it and it all clicks into place, the balletic violence is immensely satisfying. There are enough skills and upgrades to make progress feel real and worth your time, and the boss fights and dark humour are entertaining enough to off-set any repetition in the minute-to-minute combat. Its atmosphere and difficulty won’t appeal to everyone, but for those who seek out a challenge and are drawn to dark, dystopian worlds, its a frantic tumble into a ragged, bloodstained rabbit hole.
