Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is solid enough out on the course but it’s just lacking too many of the series’ fundamentals to make it worthwhile for golf fans. Concessions are often made when sports games straddle the gap between console generations old and new, but considering the two year wait for a game that is only being released on current gen hardware (and PC), the rampant slash and burn of its feature set is particularly galling. EA Tiburon has managed to create a golf game with plenty of holes in it; just not the kind that fans will relish.

The PGA Tour game series returns after a short hiatus with the first entry on current generation consoles. The game offers players some of the best gameplay yet, but much of the game feels like a step back from previous outings. The number of golfers and courses have been drastically reduced, with real female golfers completely removed, and even Pro Career Mode feels very impersonal. Night Club Challenges and online play do help to enhance the experience, but Rory McIlroy PGA Tour overall feels like only part of the main course, with the rest of the meal possibly coming as later as DLC.

What's sad is the stuff that actually is in the game isn't that bad. I expected a lot more out of the Frostbite 3 engine and its capabilities, especially seeing what it could do with destructive environments in games like Battlefield. Also, the manner in which the game was marketed also let me to the conclusion with EA touting an all new era in golf. Unfortunately, this was nowhere to be seen and the only all new era that was present was one which would make it seem like EA just doesn't care about their PGA Tour titles any longer.
