If Resident Evil HD was about going back to what started it all, and respecting the tradition that was first laid out 20 years ago, then Resident Evil Zero HD is about remembering the point at which the reign of that tradition was quickly coming to an end, as the series was making its awkward attempts to evolve into something new.
RE0 cribs a whole lot from the originals, and feels very much like an extension of the Resident Evil remake. Outside of the game’s famous train intro, 0 retreads the ground laid before it, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The mansion Chambers and Billy Coen stumble upon is nowhere near as memorable as the Spencer Mansion, but it at least feels somewhat familiar.
Some issues from the original persist, reminding you how far controls in games have come since 2002, but they are temporary frustrations that fade once you find your footing and continue your journey. You may tire of the formula by the end of the game, but with Wesker at your fingertips, don't be surprised if you find yourself eager to sprint through zombies and decapitate them with energy blasts. It's just crazy enough to work.
