Set 50 years after the climactic events of the original red faction, red faction: guerrilla allows players to take the role of an insurgent Fighter with the newly re-established red faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth defense force. Red faction: guerrilla still defines the limits of destruction-based game-play with a huge open-world, fast-paced guerrilla-style combat, and true physics-based destruction.

While Red Faction Guerrilla‘s performance and visuals have been finely polished in this re-Mars-ter, its gameplay is still a little rough around the edges. Gunplay isn’t that much fun, for instance; I found myself hitting enemies with my trusty sledgehammer where possible. Making your way through rubble after toppling a building can be problematic too, but it has to be done to collect any valuable scrap.
It’s hard to truly overlook the game’s performance issues, or indeed, issues that arrive as a product of the original’s problems, however, it’s still a well rounded experience nevertheless. The story is decent, the pace is well struck and the environmental destruction remains second to none. Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered is a patch away from greatness, but in its current state, it fails to meet that end.
Red Faction Guerilla is a one trick pony, which might lead you to believe it’s not worth playing. That’s not at all true though. The one trick this pony does is impressive even today, and the years have been kind to the game. Red Faction Guerilla ReMARStered does suffer from a generic story and floaty shooting controls, but it’s a blast if you’re looking for a mindless, destructive romp where you can bring down any structure you can see.
