Content Rating: Mature

Summary

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

The game loses a little of its lustre towards the end, as you become a touch too familiar with the 'collect three fuses/valves/keys to continue' template applied between the jump scares, and the tedious sections where you'll have to hide under a bed and wait until the coast is clear. Thankfully, its relatively short run time means that no one section is completely overplayed.

Outlast is less than a year old (if counting the original PC release) but it’s already cemented itself as one of the scariest games we’ve ever played. It’s also one of the strongest debuts from a new developer, and Red Barrels should be applauded for their effort. Outlast won't be for everyone, but if you have even an inkling of interest in the genre, then it's absolutely worth checking out. Let it be known that Outlast is a genuinely stressful and nerve-racking experience, but that’s exactly what a true survival horror game should be, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

All in all, Outlast is a fantastic game that really is one of the highlights of the horror game genre, creating a tense, chilling atmosphere while giving you lots of great memories(or not so great ones, depending how you look at it). Outlast is sure to make you tense and free for Playstation Plus members? Thats a steal! Everyone who thinks they can cope with this kind of game should definitely check it out. It’s one of the genre’s greats.
