Neon Abyss is undoubtedly one of the best Rogue-likes in recent years; gorgeous, meticulously designed and a hell of a lot of fun to play. It’s a shame a few bugs let it down, but hopefully they’ll be ironed out before long, then what’s left will be nothing but an exhilarating experience.
Neon Abyss is a great example of a rogue-lite game that is done right. The visuals and soundtrack make exploration a lot of fun. The gun mechanics and crazy powerups make it a lot of fun to kill everything in sight. The game just falls a little short when it comes to random rooms. They are often very small and cluttered. It is easy to lose where your character is on the screen until you either die or everything else in the room is dead.
One minor caveat that made me laugh: when you die, you’re given an old cartridge-style code to jump in where you left off with that exact loadout. However, it locks all progression and achievements/trophies. Best thing is to bite the bullet, finish your drink at the bar and dive back in.
