With the game's clever gun crafting system added into the mix, familiar tropes and techniques from classic shooting galleries feel super-charged in the game's randomized bullet-hell dungeons. When Mothergunship is firing on all cylinders, it's a satisfying and thrilling shooter where it really counts. With an incredibly fun and never uninteresting gun-crafting mechanic, it certainly goes a long way with its clever hook and an endless flow of enemies to gun down.
Mothergunship has its problems. The repetitive environments and enemy types, long load times, and forgettable dialogue are its most unlikeable attributes. Luckily, its diverse gameplay, fun and frenetic shooting, and deep gun crafting make Grip Digital’s latest enjoyable and replayable. Mothergunship is worth seeing through once but I’m sure you’ll want to tackle the campaign at least one more time.
Mothergunship is a skillfully molded combination of first-person shooter and bullet hell that exudes chaos with over the top, larger than life weapons and fast-paced action. The narrative is humorous and a great satire of the setting and the controls feel fantastic. Rarely do I play a game where dying makes me excited to keep playing and I easily lost track of the time from constantly wanting to improve and build something bigger, better, and badder.
