As the tumbleweed drifts past you in the Caspian Sea and you’re spoonfed yet more information about a dastardly dictator, you realize that sometimes less is more; that the real genius of Half-Life, a game Metro Exodus so badly wants to be, is that Valve showed restraint, leaving their fiction shrouded in mystery, a million things left unsaid. Sadly, such restraint takes bravery and if anything, for all its scope and spectacle, Exodus is guilty of playing it safe.
Metro Exodus is an ambitious sequel that retains the best parts of its predecessors, while also expanding upon their ideas in significant ways. A general lack of polish hurts those ambitions somewhat, but in the end, this is a game that is well worth the price of entry.
Gameplay feels unpolished and slow, and not in a realistic/good way. And the whole thing feels unfinished with a few hard crashes, perpetually long load times, and poor audio throughout. This series has built a reputation on its quality, but Exodus falls flat in some ways that truly matter. It does look gorgeous though, and this is still a unique world to explore, if you can ignore these many other problems.
