Mega Man Legacy Collection feels incomplete, even at the relatively low asking price. You get the first six titles that form the basis of the Mega Man Legacy (which is apt, given the compilation's name) but other than an entertaining challenge mode, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of love shown to the franchise here. This could have and should have contained way more than it actually does, even if the included titles are as enjoyable as they ever were. We imagine that if past performance is to be used as an indicator, a Mega Man X Collection and Mega Man Zero Collection will end up being sold separately way down the line and in a post-Rare Replay market, that sort of approach isn't going to really go down as well as it used to.

If it wasn’t for the Challenge Mode, this would just be a fairly humdrum collection of old games. All solid action platformers in their own right, but a somewhat limp “celebration” of Capcom’s least favored child. It would be hard to say anything other than, “It’s six Mega Man games, have fun” had the remixes not been thrown in.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is an object lesson for how game compilations should be engineered, providing rock-solid adaptation to a new platform, respecting the material’s historic context, and exercising restraint. I recommend it both to Mega Man fans and to players who haven't had the privilege of experiencing these exemplary games.

That's a feeling that permeates the entire Legacy Collection. Everything from the menu presentation to the game emulation is crafted with such care that its developers clearly understood the subject matter. It's the best Mega Man game collection to date, and shows how a classic series can be revitalized in the right hands.

By far the best and most impressive Mega Man compilation ever assembled, what Legacy Collection sacrifices in reach it more than makes up for with refinement. It presents six games almost (though not quite) flawlessly, while providing enough display options to satisfy the obsessive and casual fan alike. Add to six beautifully preserved classics a massive database and dozens of addictive custom challenges and you have an excellent package that treats the classics with the respect they deserve — something that's traditionally been absent in the U.S. market. A must-have for any Mega Man fan.

Not only is there isn’t a single bad game in Mega Man Legacy Collection, there isn’t a game included that isn’t great. Whether you’re someone who has beaten the core NES Mega Man games hundreds of times, or if you’re someone who has always been curious about one of the most heralded franchises in gaming, Mega Man Legacy Collection is all but a no-brainer. Look, if you’ve been burned by the false promises that seem to constantly flood this industry, you owe it to yourself to pick up one of the surest things in gaming, period.

Regardless, if you’re a fan of the blue Astro Boy-like bot, or would simply love to check out great old-school 8-bit era games that weren’t made by Nintendo, look no further. At $14.99 this collection is a steal.

After booting the game up I was inspired to beat all six games again and work on the challenges, so the Mega Man Legacy Collection did its job. I'd really like to see more Legacy packs down the line from Capcom -- perhaps with a bit more bravado in terms of extras and alternate modes of play.

Still, I can’t pretend that Mega Man Legacy Collection exists in a vacuum. Others are making more impressive and expansive collections, and even an older Mega Man compilation from 10 years ago had more content than this one. The games themselves are still fantastic and have held up about as well as anything from the NES library. I just wish this was a more complete celebration of the Blue Bomber.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is an appreciation of gaming past that showcases a huge chapter of the video game industry’s history. It is impossible to escape the nostalgia of the series. Often, when playing, I wasn’t a man in his thirties worrying about his receding hairline and planning upcoming nuptials, but instead a youngster, sitting on the shag carpet of a friend’s house, way too close to an oversized tube television.

Overall the package does little more than give me an excuse to play through these six great games all over again (for the 10,000th time), yes that includes 4, 5, and 6. Fans of Mega Man should definitely check it out, as the fan service and museum alone are worth the price of admission to hardcore enthusiasts. I am now awaiting the inevitable Mega Man X collection, or at least DLC adding 7-10 to this package.

There is an obvious wealth of 8 bit NES games begging for the same treatment as the Mega Man games. Digital Eclipse has not stated which they will be doing next but based on the work they have done with the Mega Man series, we definitely hope for more of them!

Despite a few technical shortcomings, Mega Man Legacy Collection is a love letter to one of the best franchises in retro gaming history. It's packed with great gameplay, a museum's worth of never before seen pictures and information, and everything Mega Man fans could ever ask for. Well, except for a brand new Mega Man game, but that'll have to wait another decade or so. This Legacy Collection is worth adding to your collection.

There were countless moments throughout my near 20 hours with the game where I know I would have moved on to something less punishing if I weren't playing it for review. But I'm glad I own the Mega Man Legacy Collection. It's a peek into the early days of complex level design, interlocking combat mechanics, basic physics, and the best of what could be accomplished visually and sonically on the NES.

At the end of the day I'd recommend this to everyone. Regardless of whether you've played Mega Man before, or even if you're in need of a good history lesson. It's doubtful that there are any other 8-bit games that feel as good and current after this amount of time, but by all means don't take my word for it. Try them out for yourself.
