Still, this reboot is worth paying $20 for as it’s better than the original games in every way. It plays smoother, looks better than anything out there, and has a kick-ass soundtrack with a goofball announcer to boot. If you absolutely must recreate your childhood, then pick up the $40 pack, but most will be satisfied spending half that.

While Killer Instinct is fun, it's ultimately undone by its lack of game modes. Single-player fighters looking to sharpen their wits won't find much to play with here. Aside from taking on CPU opponents through the normal Versus menu, Killer Instinct offers a Survival mode that keeps throwing out opponents in a never-ending gauntlet. There's no goal in this mode, other than bragging rights and Killer Points, which unlock cosmetic items, stages, and profile decals.

The great training offered by Killer Instinct will help you get your feet wet, and it might just introduce you to some concepts that'll make you understand all fighting games on a slightly deeper level. That's a great touch. The flexible pricing is nice, but even at the full $40, Killer Instinct feels like a solid addition to the genre. It's also one of the better games to hit the Xbox One at launch, so if you've ever been interested in a fighting game, you might want to give this one a shot.
