Halo: Spartan Assault isn’t a terrible game, but more of a disappointing one. It is great that console players can finally play this once mobile-only title, and it is great the team added in the new co-op mode. For $15 it is hard not to recommend it, if only because the drought for new games on these machines is in full force. Just remember before going in where this game originated, and set expectations accordingly.

Halo: Spartan Assault is everything you could have wanted in a top-down, Halo styled shooter. From the weaponry and gameplay to the story and graphics, the game does an excellent job of capturing much of what has made games from the Halo universe so enjoyable. In a way, the game plays like Halo 4’s “Spartan Ops”, giving you a few missions between each plot cutscene, and that format lends itself incredibly well to the type of gamplay experience that Halo: Spartan Assault is aiming for.

It’s nice to see the Flood back in action since Halo 3, but it still wasn’t enough for us to overlook one very important aspect. Besides its impressive sound effects, everything about Spartan Assault felt like a rushed-over port and does not offer any type of depth or impressions to warrant its release as an Xbox One downloadable title. Nevertheless, it still felt like Halo, which means a lot to would-be buyers.
