When I finished The Walking Dead’s first season, I never thought this style of game would work two years into the future. It was my favorite game of 2012, but I thought that Telltale’s conversations would probably grow old in The Walking Dead’s second season and subsequent games. I was wrong. I don’t know if Game of Thrones the video game is better than Game of Thrones the television show as a whole. But the choices I’ve made are sticking with me way more than any scene that HBO has aired.
Tough decisions, well-acted original characters in interesting situations, and a strong, provocative ending kick off Telltale’s new Game of Thrones series in a great way. Its nature as a side-story to the HBO show means we won’t get to decide the fate of Westeros, but this introduction is convincing evidence that the future of House Forrester puts enough at stake to make choices matter.
Even so, the narrative woven by Game of Thrones is a compelling one, filled with intrigue, conflict, and death… lots and lots of death. I’d highly recommend it to either fans of the books, the HBO series, or Telltale games in general.
