Full disclosure, in the ten hours we spent with Dungeon of the Endless over the course of this review, we didn't escape from the dungeons. Even playing on the inappropriately named 'Too Easy' mode, this rogue-like can turn on you in an instant. Take your eye off the ball and your previously flourishing band of survivors can be unceremoniously wiped out, taken down by rapidly spawning hordes of enemies without so much as a last breath with which to cry for help.
Despite the shaky start, Dungeon of the Endless is a fascinating game. It manages to blend the constituent parts of different genres together to create an engrossing strategy game. The initial learning curve is perhaps a little too steep for some players, and it does seem to hide certain mechanics for playing behind menus that aren’t immediately apparent, so it does run the risk of turning some players off, but for those that continue onward, it offers an incredibly deep and complicated experience.
Dungeon Of The Endless isn’t the most accessible roguelike out there, even ignoring its already high difficulty level, and it certainly doesn’t provide endless fun. But considering £8 would barely get you a couple of costume changes when it comes to most DLC it seems destined to go down as one of the hidden gems of the year.
