While Ashes of Ariandel is ultimately a safe addition to Dark Souls III, it's convincingly satisfying; the risk of death at any moment is as likely as finding a new piece of practical gear or the discovery of an unexplored path. Just don't expect any areas as memorable as those in the main game or revelatory moments that substantially expands the lore.
Ashes of Ariandel offers more Dark Souls III, which can only ever be a good thing in my book. It offers anywhere from five to eight hours of content depending on how thorough and skilled you are, an interesting new world to explore, wonderful new enemies to fight, new loot to plunder and use and two new bosses to fell. If the story had more of an impact and the PvP offered rewards for winning, I would say this is one of the best DLCs From Software has released.
Ashes of Ariandel is a great addition to the already wonderful Dark Souls III, however, it's far too short and the arena could have used a little more work. But the game world as a canvas paints more stories and works superbly. It ends abruptly after a monstrously cool boss and left us longing for the next piece of DLC. The second expansion can't come soon enough.
