Castlestorm: Definitive Edition is exactly that – a remastered edition of an enjoyable game. Bar some issues with the controls the game offers an enjoyable mix of tower defense, RTS and action all wrapped up in a fun exterior. There’s probably little here to convince owners of the original game to double-dip, but for newcomers there’s a huge amount of content which should keep you coming back for some time.
Despite the addition of the DLC packs bonus missions and beautifully updated graphics, if you’ve previously purchased CastleStorm in the past I find it somewhat difficult to recommend that you buy it again unless you want to get those all important “Xbox One Achievements” or never played the DLC packs. I wish there was some kind of upgrade program in place to purchase it at a reduced cost for those who purchased the game on the Xbox 360 as other titles have done recently.
The graphics and art style compliment the overall feel of the game, which is lighthearted but with plenty of depth. The script is charming and story is delivered in bite-sized chunks, perfect for this kind of pick-up-and-play title. The mechanics are simple yet engaging, and the merging of tower defence, brawler and castle destruction is the ideal balance of easy-to-play yet difficult-to-master. Simply put, CastleStorm has a lot going for it.
