Summary

BADLAND is an atmospheric side-scrolling action adventure platformer set in a gorgeous forest full of various inhabitants, trees and flowers. Although the forest appears to be right out of a beautiful fairy tale, there’s something terribly wrong. The player controls one of the forest dwellers to find out what’s going on, and discovers an astonishing number of imaginative traps and obstacles on the way.

Badlands offers local co-op, multiplayer, and a ton of levels to keep players going, yet it feels like a game made for quick access, and I found myself getting rather bored after 30 minutes of play. On a mobile system this game feels right at home with in its casual play time, but I can’t help but feel a little alienated with it on consoles.

What it comes down to is that, even though it's a redesigned version of its mobile counterpart, BADLAND: Game of the Year Edition is experimental and rich enough to justify its existence on a home console.

Badland is a visually appealing game, with its expertly crafted locations and characters bringing to mind Ubiart games like Rayman and Child of Light. The translation from the little screen to the big screen has done this title a world of good, showing off the great work that has gone into making its environments interesting and thought provoking. It’s a shame, then, that none of the visual concepts are explained in anyway, leaving to guess at what on earth is going on in this dark, fragile looking world.
