Well, if you enjoy ploughing from level to level tackling largely the exact same tasks in largely the exact same manner then Asterix and Obelix XXL3 might make you smile. For myself, once an avid fan, it simply doesn’t do enough that I haven’t done before in countless other games. It is better than some of those other games and worse than some and this is where the game sits. Slap bang in the beige wallpapered waiting room of mediocrity. By no means is Asterix and Obelix XXL3 a bad game, but unfortunately for Microids, it is a hugely forgettable one.

This series has become something of a cult hit over the years. In certain European countries, Asterix & Obelix are still mighty mascots — France even have a theme park dedicated to the duo. It’s unfortunate then that their license has been relinquished to such a bland and uninspired creation in Asterix & Obelix XXL 3: The Crystal Menhir on Xbox One, especially when previous entries have been quirky, imaginative titles. Die hard fans may find some enjoyment in the joyless massacre of thousands, but others will no doubt find more to digest within the previous entries.

And in co-op, it’s twice the fun (especially given the single-player buddy AI isn’t as aggressive or proactive as it should be), particularly on the couch. This Holiday season you honestly couldn’t get a better family-fun game to play, and there’s a lot to sink into here. There’s no flash-in-the-pan design around this; it’s full of longevity, replayability and life -- everything you want in a game for everyone. Highly recommended.
