Although Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 goes above and beyond that of a standard remaster by adding in new systems and mechanics, it still feels pretty bland and dated at its core. There’s no shortage of things to unlock and collect, and indeed the game has never looked so good, but its constant repetition and its recycled gameplay loop, ultimately drags the experience down. Furthermore, its asking price is far too steep.
If you happen to still love the Asterix & Obelix franchise, then I suppose Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 is a no-brainer. It’s not a bad game by any means, but it’s certainly not good or genre-defining in any way. It’s very much of a time – a time that was 12 years ago – and struggles to live up to standards set by modern games of a similar genre. It’s fine, but don’t expect anything more than minimal mirth for a few hours.
That said, we can imagine that this would go down well with a lot of younger gamers, even though a lot of the references might go over their heads. If you have kids, you could probably just play it together, and while the combat, colours, and puzzles will amuse them, you can enjoy the in-jokes and the decade-old cultural references.
