Sonic does his best to make things like they used to be, but all the candlelit dinners and chaos emeralds in the world can’t hide the fact that we’ve both changed. It may not be the be all end all Sonic game that professed enthusiasts like myself have been waiting 15 years for, but Sonic 4 is a fun, frenetic download for fans and newcomers alike.

Sonic 4 isn’t a perfect revival of the series’ old-school heritage, and not every gameplay element works perfectly—rolling a giant Indiana Jones-style boulder down a track and having to use pillar switches to solve minimal puzzles come to mind—but there’s enough old-school here to satiate hardcore Sonic fans. With as tarnished as this series’ reputation is, this is pretty good first effort back.

Sonic 4 will take solid two or three hours to burn through with the time increasing significantly if you hope to unlock everything. Potential replay value is fairly high. You can collect seven chaos emeralds, unlock Super Sonic, and compete for the best times and scores through online leader boards. Despite all this, the game still feels a bit light on content at $10, but Sonic fans will still find it a worthy investment.
