Summary

Six years have passed since Raccoon City was destroyed and the government has dismantled the Umbrella Corporation from the inside-out. But the terror is not over. Now a U.S. Agent, former Raccoon Police Officer Leon Kennedy has been dispatched on a mission to Europe to save the President's daughter from a "crazed organization" that bares a striking behavioral resemblance to creatures found in the Arklay Mountains. Is there a connection between these foes and the horrible nightmares from the past?

Resident Evil 4 was an incredible game in 2005, and surprise surprise, it’s still an incredible game in 2011. Graphics and controls have predictably tarnished with time, but the gameplay is still as sterling as ever. If you liked the original, getting the HD remake is a no-brainer.

The thrill of Resident Evil 4’s gonzo moments lives on in full force thanks to updated visuals. Conquering a mutated sea creature on a tiny wooden boat still gets the blood pumping, especially without the fuzzy haze of last-gen graphics. It’s still terrifying to flee from frenzied mobs only to be greeted head-on (or should I say head-off?) by a chainsaw-wielding maniac. Though the textures and character models are much sharper than previous versions, some may find the lack of detail and muted colors dull.

You'll especially enjoy the additional "Separate Ways" missions featuring Ada Wong, the spicy Chinese secret agent who manages to kick ass without ever ripping her slinky, split-leg wardrobe. Just don’t expect anything brand new, aside from Achievements, Trophies and a return to the GameCube’s difficulty setting.

RE4 isn't a particularly scary game, but it has its moments, and they're sprinkled far enough apart to make each one exponentially more enjoyable when you encounter it. If you're not necessarily a fan of the series or haven't yet played Resident Evil 4, this is arguably the best the franchise has to offer, and the slick new look brings it closer to what we've come to expect visually from games this generation.

When I began replaying Resident Evil 4 HD for this review I thought I'd enjoy it again, but I'd clearly forgotten a lot of the really cool bits. While the opening chapter proved to be a lesson in re-learning how to play, once it all clicked again it became apparent just how much I love Capcom's highly-celebrated game. For me it's easily the best Resident Evil title, and an absolute must-buy for anyone interested in action or horror. Resident Evil 4 remains one of the greats.

Resident Evil 4 HD is a nice update to a very popular game, but it isn’t the most definitive version. That title still goes to the Wii version. While the HD updates are about 75% nice and 25% foul, the gameplay innovations using the Wii’s unique controls were a far more impressive update four years ago. However, if you aren’t a fan of the Wii’s controls and you’ve never played Resident Evil 4, the time is now; add Resident Evil 4 HD to your library and experience this classic.
